I am looking to purchase an AK-47. I am quite familiar with the Romanian and the ones by Arsenal. I would prefer one with the stamped receiver in either the side or underfolder design. I am not wanting to spend over $600. Any suggestions as to how I would get the most for my money are sincerely welcome and appreciated. ( And no, I don't want an AR-15. Thanks anyway)
 
Vepr is technically stamped but stronger and heavier than most stamped receiver guns. It also has slightly difficulty mounting a lot of accessories that fit other stamped guns like foregrips and buttstocks.

On the milled side, you can get arsenal, but rarely for under 600.

shot it for the first time today at 50 and 100 yards, very happy with it! With iron sights, after a little pratice, I was shooting chest sized targets easy.

Cost $550 and worth it. I have seen the Romanian ones for like $350 and besides looking like junk, the accuracy is hit or miss.

There was another guy at the range todya with a Romanian AK and he was commenting how the accuracy was not good with it.


oh yeah, my model was an AMD-63.

Also, here that Arsenal Inc, different company from Arsenal USA! makes extremely nice and accurate ones too

I have a Vector AK in route to my dealer as I write this. Should be in Wednesday of this coming week from FBMG Inc. out of Utah.

I have heard that they are one of thee best kit AK clone available. Supposed to be a Heinz57 of Hungarian, Polish and US parts.

Was 475.00 before tax, shipping, transfer fee, yada, yada.

I'll let you know what I think about it in the coming week.
 
If I was going to get an AK right now it would be an RPK from southern ohio gun, or the yugo underfolder its $398, both are less than $500.

Other than those -- a WASR GP is a great shooter my buddies outshoots my sar1.
 
I have a norinco mak-90 I know you said you wanted a stamped reciever but mine is milled, it is great an has served me well with a 1000 or more rds through it not a single problem. Mine came looking brand new, but was used it had a thumbhole stock which i replaced soon after i got it. I bought it for $300 out the door!
 
Who makes that RPK form SOG? It doesn't give many details

i don't the particular make of that one, but at the shop up the road they have the norinco mak-91's for about $450 that looks alot like that one! bi-pod 18 or 20" barrel and 75rd drum with that same type buttstock! it dosen't have that carry handle though.
 
Well, I pretty much decided that if I get another AK, it will be in 5.45. I don't want a heavy SAW clone for that. The standard AK74 look is fine, though I do want to maximize accuracy as much as possible.

Once again I agree! I have found that i was able to get alot more rds on target faster with the 5.45 and even though it is smaller caliber it is still pretty devestating. I have seen the effect of the 5.45 caliber while in the desert, getting shot with anything is not good but the 5.45 tore the body up.
 
If you want an underfolder the CAI yugo builds with a new barrel are hard to beat.

Any AK out there will do chest sized groups at 100 yards, unless there is something seriously wrong with it. My MAK-90 was the worst and it was 6-8, and a lot of that was me. My SAR was similar until I put a red dot on it, then I got a .8in group at about 60-70 yards. Had I never used the red dot, and really taken my time, I'd be another guy dogging cheap AKs.

The iron sights are just really horrible, at least for me. If someones getting bad groups, chances are its not the rifle. Most AKs will do under 5in at 100 yards in the right hands.
 
Thanks for all of the Info. I believe I will be looking at the Yugo underfolder and the Veper brand. Now I need to see about selling my 1950 Winchester 94 .30-30 to generate the cash needed for the AK purchase. Thanks again!

I would recommend hanging on to that Winny 94 and finding an alternative means of generating cash for an ak.

You know Winchester is going out of the levergun business which (and this is just a guess) will probobly raise the value of their products already in circulation. Won't be easy to replace, especially a 1950 model, when down the road you realize getting rid of it might have been a boo boo. :uhoh:
 
Pretty much any AK is going to be bang-around-the-inner-circles-of-hell-and-central-Africa durable and ravishingly-feed-me-hungry-boringly reliable. Even my $320 Rommie WASR chews through anything I feed it and asks for more. Even sand. I've had mine for a year and a half and have maybe 2200 rounds through it. Fired about 500, cleaned the receiver. Fired another thousand or so, cleaned the receiver. Fired about 700, decided I was bored. Threw a handful of river bed sand in the action, fired 30 rounds through it, looked at it approvingly, decided it should be cleaned, so I threw it in the Clark Fork. I waited for the bubbles to stop, took it out of the river, drained the barrel, then proceeded to dump 20 rounds downrange without incident. It took 20 rounds for a magazine full of river silt and water to catch up with it and it malfunctioned twice in the next ten rounds. The only other malfunction I've had with it was with some very cheap, cruddy Russian stuff that was so heavily lacquered it made even the old school lacquered Wolf stuff seem priemo. Thats 3 malfunctions in over 2000 rounds, almost all of it exclussively Wolf steel cased. I've only cleaned the weapon 3 or 4 times since I bought it and until today, had never cleaned the bore at all. In order to get two of those malfunctions, I had to fill the weapon and the magazine with sand and river water.

You only pay extra for fit and finish, and accuracy when you buy an AK. Fit and finish is largely irrelevent if you're like me and plan on replacing all or most of the furniture anyways. Thus the only thing that remains is accuracy. The VEPRs, Arsenal Incs, and Krebs are all reportedly capable of 2 MOA or so. The less expensive Rommies and MAKs are typically about twice that--but still easily COM at 200 yards or more.

The sights are the weak point. Even Mojos can only do so much. I can't wait till my income tax return allows me to put a Kobra or PK-AS-V on mine.

You can also consider (probably not find or buy at a reasonable price but...)
