The SSR is the Bulgarian WASR. Parts not good enough for the .mil. The Romy G rifles are military grade parts. The SSR doesnt compare to the Yugo.

Can you get WASRs with milled recievers, instead of stamped? And can you get them with chrome lined barrels? I read somewhere that chrome lined barrels in AK variant rifles will not be readily availible sometime in the near future (except if its a top line I.E. Arsenal, Vector, Saiga, etc.).

You can't get wasr's with a milled reciever. The only current supply of milled reciever rifles is from Arsenal Bulgaria/Las Vegas with the SAM series. Used Bulgarian rifles are still readily available but the prices are rising.

WASRs do have chromed barrels. The only rifles without chromed barrels are the Yugo builds because the barrels in the kits were trashed and some of the newer kit builds from Lancaster, Vector and other US builders. The new importation restrictions on de-milled kits forced the importers to cut the barrels. As the earlier kits that still had original uncut barrels dry up, builders are forced to use US made barrels that aren't chrome lined. Confused yet?

All Russian-Saigas and Vepr, Romanian-WASR and SAR etc., Chinese, Egyptian, Bulgarian, Hungarian and Polish have chrome lined barrels. The exceptions are more recent kit builds and any Yugo. Bottom line, ask before you buy if you're unsure or if you care.

From what I've read, Saiga conversion can be super cheap, or nearly mind-boggling in expense(IIRC, they need special forearms since the gas tube is different. I dislike the appearence of the converted Saiga with stock forearm.)
I did a "full monty" Saiga conversion on my S308, and it wasn't mind bogglingly expensive. I paid just less than $400 for the rifle, I think around $110 for a great birch stock set from www.ironwooddesigns.com, RSA trigger group for roughly $100(could have saved by getting a Tapco), and the new gas tube from Dinzag for like $40, and the bolt on lower handguard retainer, also from Dinzag. I forget how much the butt cap was for the stock, and the pistol grip bolt and nut.
Slightly over your budget, but going with the Tapco FCG, a cheaper stock set would put it at your budget.
You could also do a "bare bones" conversion, and upgrade it as you save more money. That would be less than your budget.
I also enjoyed the project, and learned a lot.

Slimjim, care to post your source for this info. I have never heard this.

I've seen this claim as well, but have never seen it substantiated. I'd like to see the source as well.

Did you thread the barrel and add a muzzle device?
No. I forgot to add that. I live in CT, and it has to be permanently affixed, so I haven't done it yet.

After a little research into the SSR rifle, I came up with some interesting facts. Remember these statements are from the guy trying to make money by selling these rifles, but in my experience Jimmy Streetman is an honest and very up-front person in the firearms industry.
