I just recently received a Polish Underfolder AKMS variant imported by Century Arms and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for very reliable and cost conservative magazines.

I already have two 30 round blued steel magazines which I believe to be Romanian, and they work great.

I'm open to any suggestions, any personal experience, polymer vs steel, etc.

Without a doubt, the best mags are Russian Slabsides. Of course, they run like $75 apiece, weigh a ton, and can be used as a blunt-trauma weapon by themselves- 1mm thick steel throughout.

Practically speaking, especially for an underfolder, find some Hungarian AMD 20-rounders. They're compact, well made, and let you get lower to the ground when shooting prone.

But basically, practically speaking, even rusted to crap and dented, as long as the feedlips aren't completely wrecked, almost any AK mag will work in almost any AK and work flawlessly.

if you have an AK that doesnt work with most com-bloc mags, find a new ak. Wasr's can be finicky with magazines, some people have to use polymer waffle mags because their wasrs magwell(dont think its called that on aks but you get the picture) was ground down too far and the surplus steel mags wouldnt work.

Its better for a polymer mag to be to tight(because it will break in and fit fine eventually) than a steel mag to be too loose(lost cause).

If your Wasr is giving you alot of problems maybe look to upgrade

dillon,

I use 10 or 12 steel fluted commie milsurp. Like your Romanians, they offer great bang for the buck. Hard to beat-'em.

I like the steel commie surplus mags in mine. They're cheap and work well. I bought a bunch of the Bulgarian plastic mags, but they're a very tight fit in my WASR. Had to sand them down.

I have a couple Yugo mags, a couple E-german, a crap-ton of unknown-origin--probably Romanian--steel mags, a few chinese, a Bulgy waffle, and hungarian mags.

So far, I tend to shoot the Hungarian the most. And all my builds are fitted with the Hungarian.

But none have failed. Ever. Even with full-auto.

i have surplus steel ones that are ok, but one has a big dent in it so i can only load about 15-20 rounds in it or it causes issues. i also bought some tapco 30 round plastic mags that work great.

From a practical point, the Hungarian 20s allow easier handling, but the Bulgarian 30 and 40 round polymer waffle mags are the best for offering capacity and robustness.

The best AK magazines I own are East German made.
The Chinese magazines I have are over twenty years old and still working fine.

The only issue I have with the waffle mags is that they are prone to not pulling out of pouches easily. I prefer the smoother ribbed magazines or completely smooth polymer ones.

Has anyone had any bad experience with Tapco mags or other waffle mags when in use in vest pouches or mag carriers?
