I am looking at the Remington 700 Varmint Lam stock, Kimber 84M classic,Tikka T3 Deluxe

I am just looking to add a new caliber to my gun safe, no exclusive purpose for this rifle. Your thoughts.

Earlier this spring I was thinking of picking up a .243. Possibly in a Rem Model 7 LSS. It would mainly be used as a general-purpose utility rifle around the farm. You kind of got me thinking about it again. Nice going.

Another possibility...

Thad--The .243 Win is a lovely, and somewhat neglected, cartridge.

I'm having a lot of fun, and almost-XLNT accuracy, with my .243 Win Ruger M-77 Mk II Target gun. Ruger trigger is rough; you'd want to have a 'smith stone it. But mine keeps 'em well > 1 moa when i do my part. More like 3/4 moa.

Was you to state a specific purpose for this rifle you'd get a lot more useful comments, think I.

I was looking at the tikka, nice rifle, I really liked the trigger. Then I found a used Winchester 70 at a pawn shop and got that. Its gonna be my coyote/varmint rifle.

if you get the Tikka, just check the wood very carefully for minute cracks at the corners of the action, etc. Also be aware that so far as I know the T3 does not come in a short action, meaning the 243 is going to be a short action with a long action throw. In general, however, the Tikka would probably be less likely to be problematic than the other two.

You might wish to also look at the Browning A-bolt, one of the CZ's...

Savage. I own and recommend the Model 11GL... GL if you're left-handed... G if you're right-handed. And this one has sights.

There are so many good guns in 243, my bidget would probably be the deciding factor. Personally, I want a 243 Browning 1885 low wall.

Looking at the list you've posted, I think I'd opt for the Kimber. If that gun is on your list, you will be disappointed with the fit and finish of the Savage, even though that gun is a shooter.

It seems to me that your question is not "which rifle would you buy?' but "which rifle should I buy?". Which, even is I were an expert in .243 rifles, I still would not know unless I knew your situation.
Just my two cents.

Decided

I have ordered a American Classic model 14. After all the Savage suggestions and research I thought it to be the best choice. I already have many pretty rifles, this one should be good for rugged use, and the 2.5-10x42mm Tasco. The price point was great. $724.94 (CND) taxes in shipped to my front door. Thank-you to all.

"...somewhat neglected..." Not as much as it used to be. I suspect because of the 6mm BR. We can get match grade bullets up to 115 grains and a slew of good hunting bullets now. When I first had mine, there were no match bullets and the heaviest bullet was a 105. Mind you, a 105 SP turns a ground hog nearly inside out.
"...the 2.5-10x42mm Tasco..." Change that when you can. Tasco's are ok, but they're low end scopes.
"...ordered a..." It has 1 in 9.25 rifling. It'll like heavy bullets. 85 grains and up. Light bullets won't stabilize properly out of your new rifle. There's no reason not to use heavy bullets for varmints either.

Also be aware that so far as I know the T3 does not come in a short action, meaning the 243 is going to be a short action with a long action throw.
The T3 has one action, but the bolt stops are different lengths, therefore a short action cartridge will have a short action throw.

The T3 is one heck of a design.
I have a Lite in 308Win that will shoot any factory ammo I've tried into less than 1.5MOA, less than 1MOA with any premium factory load.
The rifle's operation is the best of all of them.

You've made ytour descision though, so it's too late for me to say more good things about the T3.

You'll still be happy with the Savage of course...

100gr SP are rated for deer. Winchester PowerPoints and CoreLokts both. The only one I'd previously seen heavier is a Hornady 105gr A-Max and I haven't tried it yet. Is there a 115gr hunting bullet? I ask because I just looked back and saw that my Model 11GL also has the 1:9.25 twist rate.

Sunray,

I went with the Tasco because this combo is my least expensive rifle. It will be used for coyote when I do hunt with it. Other than that strictly fun, the scope has an red illuminated reticle. All other scopes I own are 3200 0r 4200 series and Leuopolds. Thanks for the advice.

price vs options vs quality

Plus you aren't cemented to that particular caliber as much as you are with other rifles...

barrel, wrench and go/no-go gauge...you have a 308 or a 358, or a 22-250 etc etc....
