I am looking for the best ammo to put through the Ruger 10/22. I am not looking for match grade (expensive) ammo but something that can be bought in bulk. What I have in mind is something that I can buy in mass quantities to feed the family with if a survival situation ever presented itself.

I recently purchase a box of remington hollow points that did not feed worth didly squat. It is now pistol ammo because it is worthless in the 10/22.

To recap, I am looking for reasonably priced, accurate, feeds well and will do a nice job on small game.

Thanks in advance,

TerryBob

Drop by your local Wallymart or K-Mart and look for some Winchester Dynapoints (box coded WD22LR) bulk packs or, at your local Winchester Stocking Dealer, the W22LRB Value Pack.

The guys over at Rimfire Central (GREAT 10/22 resource!) are pretty enthusiastic about this load. Supposed to be excellent accuracy for the money.

Alas, I have not been able to try them myself.

Hope this helps.

I agree with whitebear, Dynapoints are the way to go.
Our local Wal Mart did not stock them. They had Federal bulk pack.(Dirty and not that accurate in my 10-22) So I asked the manager if he could order any Dynapoints, I said I would pay for a few boxes up front, he declined my offer and said he would order some to see if they would sell.
Now his store has four rows of Dynas and one row of Federal.:D
Do not stock up on any Remington Thunderbolts. VERY soft and lead badly.
I had a shooting session cut short two weeks ago when my S&W 617
started throwing bullets everywhere but on the paper.
They leaded up the barrel after just 200 rounds. Check over at the sixgunner .com forum for my post on Thundebolts.
If money were no object I would shoot CCI Mini Mags all the time. They burn clean and are a bit faster than the Dynas. but the Dynas are so close, and the bulk pack is so cheap I am a happy camper.
Steve.

Buy one box of as many different brands of high velocity ammo a you can find. Shoot your rifle with each one to find the brand it likes best. Then order a case of the same lot from your local gun shop. That's as close as you can get with .22's. Every rifle will shoot every brand differently and trying every brand is the only way to find the one that your rifle likes best.

Thanks Guys,

I appreciate it more than I can express. This sounds just like what I need. I have tried the CCi Mini Mags and really liked them but cant afford them in mass quantities.

Take care,

TerryBob

My 10/22 loves Mini-Mags.

I know a great many people who have had problems with running standard velocity ammo through 10/22s. A few have ground the back of the bolt down just a bit and it has made all the difference in the world. All shoot ground bolts shoot 100% reliably with just about any ammo.

I tried a ground bolt in mine it worked great. I like Mini-Mags and they work 100% for me so I don't plan on changing anything permenently.

Can you describe better about the ground bolt. Where do you grind it? Pics? My 10/22 is very ammo sensitive. I am looking to correct it if I can.
Thanks,
-Jason-

I must be the only one who's had bad luck with all 3 (Federal, Winchester & Remington) brands of Wal-Mart bulk packs.

None of them function reliably in either my 10/22, 22/45, or my Taurus PT-22. All 3 brands seem to have varying charges in each cartridge as the reports when firing range from a nice sharp crack followed by normal function of the gun to a weak pop followed by a stovepipe.

Stingers work just fine in all three guns, but they're a little expensive for regular plinking.

I think I'll just stick to the 50 round boxes and pay a little more for reliability.

Go to rimfirecentral.com/10/22 action/tips and tricks.

Basically the rear bottom of the bolt is grounded round so to speak. This apparently reduces bolt weight a bit and makes travel easier..............what do I know I'm not a smith..........but it does make a difference.

I had thought about doing it to mine but Mini Mags are fine with me. Actually any of the speedier ammo works just great. It's just the standard velocity stuff that causes hicups. Heck I've had my 10/22 for a couple of years and it's not been shot enough to be really broken in so that could be part of the issue.

Up until recently I was having good luck with Remington Thunderbolts, but now I'm using Aguila Standard Velocity. It cost abit more, about $16/500, but it shrunk my groups from 0.50'' to 0.40''. I've also been using the Aguila Subsonic in my Mitchell pistol and it's just scary accurate. But every .22 has it's favorite and you just have to find it. What a terrible, horrid, time consuming chore.

CCI mini mags

That's what my ruger 10/22 and Mk II like.

But like others have said, try different ones. What is good in one may not work well in another of the same model gun.

CCI Mini Mags here too. Yeah they're getting up there a little bit but I jus stop off here & there and pick up a box or two at a time. They add up.

I've been having some pretty good luck with the Velociters also.

Here's what my 10/22 does with Dynapoints at 50yards.

I agree with the Win Dynapoint recommendation. For a budget ammo, they certainly perform well in all my .22 rifles and pistols. A few years ago, I thought K-Mart was going belly up and wouldn't be selling it any more. I bought a bunch at that time. I only have a few boxes left. I haven't seen it recently, but it sounds others have, I'll have to go a search and buy mission soon.
