My dad just got a mini-14 (I ended up getting an SKS myself) and I wanted to get him some mil surp ammo. I hear that minis aren't really supposed to use mil surp but he wants a lotta ammo for not a lotta $.

Has anybody tried any mil surp in their mini? Can somebody tell me the best ammo they've tried (re: reliability and accuracy [if any]) and where they got it. I'd appreciate it.

Military surplus works fine as does the Wolf metal cased ammo. I use whatever I can pick up cheap, never had any problems with any ammo in my Mini 14.

save your trouble milsurp .223 only comes in two flavors now days, GONE and very expensive

i would suggest WOLF

winnie white box, 45 grains, usually 10 to 13 dollars a box, 40 rounds per box, from wallyworld, Academy, etc. or Blue box, Black Hills , standard 55 grains, 50 rounds per box, 13 to 15 dollars a box, at Carter's country. Both of these will proly be the most accurate as well.

The only ammo I ever had problems using in a Ruger Mini-14, was the Brown Bear line. FTF's

Strangely enough it was a fluke, I could shoot that ammo out of my AR. It appeared to be just this one Mini. I have since given it to a friend, and they run Win Whitebox. No problems...

Mini's aren't delicate, so I wouldn't, and in fact don't, hesitate to run just about anything through mine.

I'm seeing some Remington .223 ammo, both UMC and Core-Lokt, appearing on Wally World shelves around Tampa. No WWB in .223, though.

Wally World Remington UMC works great in mine.

Almost as cheap as 5.56 NATO Federal was a couple years ago.:(

The UMC is probably better for the gun in the long run; it has a more approprate powder charge. The 5.56 makes a big flash and a big boom, though, if it suits your purposes.

There's some milsurp around here, but it's not dirt-cheap. It's not REALLY expensive, but it's no bargain, either.

I believe the Mini has a 5.56 chamber. Blast away with whatever you want.

Mine mostly gets the UMC "cheap" stuff, and handloaded ammo. Steel case Wolf I avoid because of a bad experience years back.

he's looking for 1000 rounds.

Does anybody know what type of milsurp might be most "effective" in the Mini 14? Like for shooting zombies and mutant deer after TEOTWAWKI?

Thx, sorry for all the questions. I think the 14 has a 1 in 7 twist if I'm not mistaken? (I'm not an expert on 'em, though I'm becoming one on SKSs!! :neener: )

I have one of the older ones with a 1 in 10. Digests flawless
with about everything. None target loads, but best are hand
loads with 55gr seirra at 3000fps +:)
