Not sure as to what self defense ammo is best for a 3 1/4" barreled 45 ACP revolver.

I've been considering 230-gr. +P rounds like those from Ranger T @ 990 fps (4" barrel) or Double Taps 230-gr. +P @ 1,010 fps (4" barrel).

Question:

Do you feel that +P 45 ammo needs longer barrels to burn or will I still be a little ahead (with a 3 1/4" barrel) when compared to standard 230-gr. HP ammo?

Thank-you in advance of your advice!

Purely acedemic. The guy on the other end won't know the difference.

CorBon new 160grDPX made for short barrel and not +P
Speer has a new compact load in 230
Any+P should work.

I have done some backyard tests and find that 230 win white box not very good from 3in. Will not go thru 1/4" Lexan or thru old wood I have laying around. Same ammo from same box in 5" blows thru either target. I removed the 230 ball from wood with finger tips didn't even make depth of bullet. Mr S.A. Camp tested this ammo at just a little over 700fps from short 3 1/2 " I have 2, 3" compacts and till I find some of the short barrel ammo Iam going back to my Commander or Govt. size I don't need a 45cal. BB gun.
