Planning on building an 20" DMR style AR. I will be handloading the ammo for it so I'm wondering if I should get a barrel with a .223 wyld chamber, standard .223, or a 5.56/.223 chamber? Obviously I want it to function and shoot well but accuracy is going to be priority

I have several ARs with 5.56 and .223 Wylde chambers but built 18" SPR with 1:7 .223 Wylde chamber based on this build specs:

Build list:
  • White Oak Armament 18" 1:7 twist SPR Barrel .223 Wylde chamber
  • Rifle length gas tube
  • Mega Arms Billet Ambi Billet Matched set upper & lower
  • Geisselle SSA-E Trigger
  • JP Silent Capture Spring
  • Fail Zero BCG
  • Luth-AR MBA 1 Stock
  • Syrac Ordinance Adj Gas Block
  • SWFA 3-15 optic
1000 yard milk jug plinking.

77 gr Berger OTM Tactical bullet, TAC powder and CCI primers using full-length resized range brass seated to mag length.

Wylde X3
And plus 1 on White Oak barrels I have a 16" mid weight (Recce) and a 20" A2 service match rifle they flat shoot lights out.

If your planing on shooting heavy pills 65gr + the Wylde will work fine. The one I had would not shoot anything lighter accurately. Shot the barrel out trying. For me I prefer223R min spec match chambers. This way I don't have long leads which gives me more options for handloading.

The barrel twist is something you need to decide on. For it will help determine what weight bullets will shoot best. Too fast hirts the smaller pills.

See that's the thing I'd like to be able to shoot 55 grain rounds super fast and heavy rounds Long. I was thinking 1 in 8 twist in a 20in barrel but I didn't realize that Wylde chamber don't like light pills

The 223 Wylde chamber is a good chamber for AR-15 shooting particularly when paired with a 1-7 or 1-8 twist barrel.

I small base die resize my cases fired in an AR-15 rifle particularly when I load ammunition that may not be fired in the rifle that it was originally fired in. Just a bit of insurance against feeding problems.

I use a standard sizer, no reason not to get a small base if you are in the market, and check brass in a case gauge. My reloads run like a top in my Wldye chamber (Well, they did before I gave it to my elder son). Even the sized range brass that fails the gauge by a hair will run fine, but I like to run that brass back through the sizer again. A handful out of hundreds will still get scrapped. A small base die might eliminate that. If I were buying .223 dies for an AR today, I would get the RCBS set with the small base die.

Another vote for the .223 Wylde chamber. My Service Rifle is wearing its second WOA-chambered Wilson barrel. It's a 20", 1-7" twist, .223 Wylde chamber and shoots little knots with any decent bullet.

Don't give up on the idea of shooting lighter bullets in a Wylde. That's the "problem"; you won't know what your individual barrel will do with any given bullet until you try it. Both of my WOA barrels shot (shoot?) just fine with the little 52gr match hollow points. And I also had good results using those in the original 5.56mm chamber on my match gun.

I actually want to try some of the stubby 52gr match bullets in my new CZ bolt gun, but it'll be a while because I have a pile of 69gr HPBTs to use first.

.223 Wylde, 1:8. I run mostly 75 Hornady, both HPBT and ELD-M(seated longer than mag). Lights out with these. I have also accurately fired the 55 V-max, only lighter bullet I've tried. Runs govt surplus brass standard FL sized with no issues. My barrel is whoever makes RRA for them. The Wylde chamber is designed to handle 5.56 NATO loads as well.

I have a friend who shoots a lot of coyotes every year with the 55 V-max and a 1:9 wylde. If you are favoring some lighter bullets for varmint use, and willing to stick to 68 or lighter for heavies, this would be a better option. His rifle does stabilize my 75 HPBT load, but may be marginal and we've never checked it at distance but 100 yard accuracy was there.

I shoot 75 bthp bullets from my 1:8 Wylde. The leade is very long in my one Wylde chamber, though, with a 0.130" jump to the lands when loaded to mag length (2.260"). I have a newer barrel that only has a 0.055" jump, but I have not had a chance to work up any loads for it yet.

If you are only going to use your handloads for it, and only shooting for precision, I would seriously consider a .223 chamber.
