Tom, he is set on 12 Ga. In regards to the above concerns about changing platforms if he decides he would rather have another 11-87 he could always return the Benelli. We are not going to have it engraved until he is sure that he likes it.

If you were considering 20 gauges, a Benelli Montefeltro might be nice, but if you are talking 12s, stick with a Remington or a Beretta IMO. Gas shoots softer and at 2,000 shots a day that matters.

Buy one gun that does it all, Remington Versamax. This thing shoots everything from extra light target loads to full bore 3 1/2" magnum duck loads without a hiccup.

Since he is interested in high volume dove shooting, ( note, NOT hunting), a 3.5" gun isn't needed. The Benelli would be the logical choice for quality and ease of maintenance

high volume birds

I have a Versamax that I use for waterfowl and it is a very dependable shotgun, fits me well, points well, and occasionally a goose will fly into the shot string. But I would never take it to Cordoba on a dove shoot., Too heavy and unnecessary and you will never find spare parts for it but no problem with Berettas and Benellis. The duck shooting in Argentina isalso fantastic and 20 bore shotguns are all you need. I felt bad for an elderly gentleman once who had brought a 12 gauge Parker with 32 inch barrels on a dove shoot. Lifting an 8 pound shotgun a few hundred times just completely wore him down the first afternoon. The autoloaders at most of the estancias are just beat to crap. Best to bring your own gun.

I wouldn't look any further than the Beretta A400. Any of the Benelli's would hold up just as well, but the significantly harsher recoil would be a deal breaker for me for high volume shooting. Nothing against Remingtons, but they aren't known for running long strings of fire without some attention (cleaning/lubrication).

If you have ever been to Argentina and shot Doves, which most of the previous posters have not, then you would know that the outfitters supply Benellis and Berettas in 20ga.. Anything else, semiauto, will not stand up to the intense high volume shooting thats done there and no experianced shooter would want to stand there and take the pounding of a 12ga when its absolutley unnessasary.:banghead:

I have not been impressed with my new 870, I don't think Remington quality is what it was during the DuPont days. I don't know if the 1100's are manufactured to different standards, but I personally would go for an A400.
