I'm looking to get a BP Rifle and would like to stick to a flintlock traditional rifle. What is my best option for under $400?

Thanks,
Chad

Seriously, you may be able to find a Thompson Center flintlock in new or almost new condition for less than that and maybe still have enough money left over to buy a brand new after market Green Mountain "drop in" replacement barrel in the caliber and length of your choice. Plus the TC guns have a lifetime factory warranty.
TC came out with an improved hammer design and vent some years ago, and those new parts are available to upgrade the lock geometry of any older TC flintlock to greatly improve the longevity of flints and performance. They reportedly shoot really well and some folks just love shooting theirs over more expensive custom guns, and they say that TC's are very accurate.

Here's a Lyman Flintlock Kit, and you may be able to find an assembled gun for around $400 more or less depending on the recent price increases and the age of the stock on hand.

Traditions offers lots of reasonably priced working guns, and there's lots of nice used guns online if you're willing to hunt around. Ask for more info. about where to look if you feel that you need some leads.

Chad,
You know a decent lock by it self will go for over $100? That doesn't leave much cash left for stock, barrel and furniture. I see there is a Lyman flinter on Gunbroker for $375. It's been butchered a little bit, if that's what you are looking for.
The MidSouth kit deal is as good as you will find new, I guess.

Thanks guys... Has anyone used the Traditions Kentucky Rifle? Are the kits hard to put together? How much inletting is there? I'm not that handy with wood tools. I'm pretty good finishing, but not chiseling... :)

If ya want to try and learn I have a NIB traditions deerhunter flintlock that needs the rear sight- should be covered by the warranty- its a lifetime. 125.00

I bought a GPR and decided to use it instead I thought it would be handier in the brush. I gave one to a friend and he uses it with success...

not quite traditional but cheap enough ta learn on..
edited to correct the model to "deerhunter"

Thanks tallpaul, but I want something a little more traditional. I appreciate the offer though.

Thanks,
