Best brand 7.62x39 for deer

Hi all, My brother just bought himself a Ruger Mini 30. He also bought a lot of Tulammo and Brown Bear for plinking. I want to load up an new magazine with good hunting ammo and give it to him for Christmas. Anyone here hunt with a 7.62x39? What brand ammo would you recommend? Thanks.

Any hunting ammo approx. 123 gr soft nose will do the job.
Do not use full metal jacket ammo
Have fun

Watch out for Russian ammo stamped" hunting ammo"" some of it is full metal jack--no good for deer

there are US-made brass-case ammo options, they're expensive Maybe a box of 3-4 types along with that magazine, and an offer to spot for him on the range when he figures out which works best

The cost isn't a problem. I use Remington ammo for my hunting. I don't see that they make a PSP Core-Lokt in 7.62x39.

PPU (Levi Partisan) makes a 123gr round nose JJSP. I get mine from Ammo2Go for @ .52 a round. Check it out.

I used to buy a lot of PMC soft point hunting ammo.

But for many years now I reload Hornady 123 gr SP

I cannot recommend American loaded 7.62x39 ammunition, like all metric calibers we dumb of down and underload it to the time of appx 200fps compared to Russian or European loadings.

IMO at 2100 fps the 154g tula/wolf load is tops.

My fave is the 154 wolf soft point. The "hollow points" are cosmetic and I don't trust 'em on game. The 154 is also more accurate, the most accurate load i've tried in my SKS. It shoots about 2" at 100 yards, better than the 3" or 3"+ I get from the 123 grain stuff. It's also CHEAP to buy in bulk.

I'm not sure if Lapua soft point hunting ammo is still available in 7.62x39R but the 123gr JSP used to be my favorite. Or was it Sako? Can't remember, that was a long time ago.

Couple "Book of the AK-47"'s (or whatever that yearly Guns and Ammo magazine is called) they tested various loads and the 123gr Silver Bear soft point did a nice and consistent mushroom.

The 123gr HP's were basically FMJ's that liked to fragment.

Sadly they didn't test the 154gr SP's but I've heard similar reviews to what others have said in this forum.

Barring that...I'd try to find some of the boutique stuff. Skip the $13+ American brass cased stuff unless they're finally putting fancy/proven/good bullets in them.

Another vote for the Wolf 154gr soft point ammo. I have shot 2 hogs with it and neither took a step after being hit. Works great through my SAR1 and my 762x39 AR.
