I have a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum 3" revolver. I am looking for a CCW holster.

Which is the more practical carry for this medium-frame revolver -- IWB or OWB?

Some say that the six-round cylinder is too bulky to carry IWB comfortably.

I'm posting because I don't want to waste a lot of time and money going through holsters.

There are many good holster makers out there like Galco, DeSantis, Kramer, Tucker, Don Hume and countless others. If you want something that won't break the bank and is comfortable for all day carry take a look at the The Sourdough Pancake from Simply Rugged. The bottom line, they work and last a long time!

I carried mine in an OWB Safariland 5131 and and IWB Bianchi; these were OK. I could never comfortably carry it and after a while in the FL summer, I opted to sell it for an SP101 which I carry now. Don't know about Simply Rugged. Excellent revolver though...Mike

I carried an even larger sixgun IWB, a 4" S&W N-frame M58, for several years, so a GP100 is certainly IWB-capable, BUT, we are all built differently, so your results may vary.

I think the Milt Sparks PMK, an OWB rig, to be an excellent revolver holster, using them for my SP101 snubbies and 4" Speed Six.

Simply Rugged has a very good reputation for customer service and speed of delivery, among guys whose word I trust, though I have yet to order a Simply Rugged holster myself.

I carry my 3" GP100 in a Milt Sparks Summer Special II.

Like Rexster, I've carried an N-Frame IWB, so the GP100 is certainly not too big to do so. The "trick" is having pants sized to fit you and your gun instead of just sized to fit you.

Kramer makes a good OWB Holster for the GP100 and the PMK is also good.

Simply Rugged would get my vote, although it is an OWB that would need a concealment garment. You would have to cover it with a shirt, vest, jacket or something of that sort. The holster tucks in very flat against you and the shape is such that no one is going to notice that it's a holster.

loneviking,
If you add the $10 inside out straps option you can also carry the Sourdough Pancake IWB too. There's a big picture Here and if you look at the third picture on the link I provided above you will see that holster being worn IWB.

Archangel--yep, seen it that way, but IWB just isn't comfortable for me with this holster. I do want to get the Chesty Puller system as you could hide that under a shirt rather easily. And, OWB, the holster has a very flat profile. I can hide mine under a loose fitting shirt, like a Hawaiian one.

I wasn't suggestion IWB carry because I don't like it either. I just didn't want the OP to think that holster was limited to belt carry. (even though that the best way to use it IMO LOL)

It is a VERY flat holster and extremely comfortable for all day carry on your belt!
