I have tried many pistols, both autoloaders and wheel guns. I have found the answer to which one is best after a lot of target shooting and plinking, not reading magazines.

It's the Colt 1911. Why? Because I can hit what I aim at, better than any other pistol I have tried. I don't know much about the engineering and mechanicals of the guns but I shoot the 1911 real well. I have trouble with double action triggers and other guns just don't point as well.

I'm not good enough to adapt to every gun. I was a Navy Corpsman in Vietnam and carried a Colt 45. I was very motivated to learn how to use it. So my opinion is just my own.

So what shoots best for you is best for you. It's better to be best for a few than average for everyone.

Not my flavor Larry but if it suits you ... then that's what counts.

It matters not what ''the polls'' may say about different pieces .. if the individual can get on with and be proficient with, a reliable piece then ... way to go.

I might say same - for me - re my P97 but many will slam it. Don't bother me cos .. it floats my boat.

Good news!:)

The SIG P220ST for me.

You can spend years and years reading opinions on THR and listen to people who've been shooting longer than you have. But it simply comes down to this; shoot whatever works best for you. Whether its a Glock, SIG, 1911, Beretta, BHP, H&K, S&W, Walther, etc.

Happy and safe shooting everyone.

Well I don't have quite the history you do larry but I shoot my USP .45 very very well. Like you I hit what I point at and it has never failed me in my time of need.

My first centerfire handgun was a Colt Commander. Everything else.. well has to live up to that feel/fit/finish in some way shape or form to get my attention.

Suprisingly, one of my cheapest handguns is my fave to shoot/most reliable. It's a BHP clone made in Hungary. It might not say FN-Herstal on the slide but man, its a good pistol, and it's a good fit for me.

Almost feels like a 1911 when you put a monogrip on it, wieghs about the same loaded, similar action/moa.

Yes it depends. But your analogy is flawed. :D
The tools you mentioned are for very different jobs.

To compare it to tools you should be asking something on the order of which is the best general purpose hammer?

Belnap?
Craftsman?
Stanley?
mAdE in ChinA?

Debating which handgun is better is like asking a group of automotive mechanics which is better, Craftsman or Mac or Snap-On.

The answers will vary but they will be based on what they prefer, what their friends like, what they grew up with, what they can afford and most importantly what ones they already own.

You shouldn't pick your mechanic based on the name on his tools.
You should pick one based upon his/her ability to fix your car.

From time to time over the years I have tried alot of pistols, but the 1911 format has always worked for me. I just can't seem to warm up to DA/SA triggers on pistols and polymers have no appeal to me. I guess after my revolvers then only the 1911 can find a home with me.

I enjoy shootng my CZ's,S&W's, SIG's, Ruger's, Beretta's, etc; but, my everyday CCW is a fullsize Kimber Custom Defender II .45 ACP. Carry what you like and trust. I do.

1911Tuner...Thanks. It's been a long time for both of us.

For me, one of those two shots with such a pistol is a trow away. The harder I try to adjust, the worse I shoot. To me people that can shoot with a double action trigger are just plain better than me.

The one thing I knew, was that at 25 feet I could put seven shots in a four inch circle just about as fast as I could pull the trigger, and with practice, lots of it, no flyers. Shooting slow I could do 2.5 inches.

I shoot once or twice a month. At the range I trade shots with just about every kind of pistol there, and every other kind of gun too. I can't tell you if starting with the Cold 45 made it the best for me or it would have been the best for me in other situations, but after shooting other pistols, I'm glad the Navy gave me the Colt 1911.

I have a couple of HK's pistols that would fit the bill quite nicely  If I were to choose just one...prolly my USP 45 :D :D

Yeah, I think I would have a hard time with the longer trigger pull. When I shot the Glock 19 (Well, by shot I mean pointed the gun and pulled the trigger, flinching every damn time), I didn't like the trigger at all. And thats 5.5 lbs.

I am probably gonna stray away from guns with Decockers because I want to be able to carry my pistol with the hammer cocked and the safety on and not have to worry about a 10 lb trigger pull. I am safety oriented when it comes to guns. I might make an exception for guns with internal safeties.

Do you think it would be safe to carry a Sig pistol with the hammer cocked? Wouldn't it be just like carrying a Glock?
