Best fruit/vegetables to shoot?

What are some good reactive fruits or vegetables? I've seen Watermelons shot before and that always looks nice and messy, but shooting watermelons all the time could get expensive -- plus a shooting a bigger fruit like that seems even more wasteful! :)

Anyone have experience shooting apples, oranges, canaloupes, squash, pumpkins, etc.?
 
I like to eat fruit too much to want to use it for target practice. Plus you never know when you'll get hungry at the range! :D

I find that water ballons are much cheaper and react nicely to a good shot.

Water Balloons are a good idea! I had never thought of that.

But what about Tomatoes? Nobody likes those things! :) How do they usually react to being shot?
 
I agree. Those value packs of kids balloons are great fun.


I take a bag of balloons and a roll of duct tape blow up several and stick them on the tape in lieu of falling plates.


Almost rotten fruit works well and the birds eat the leftovers
 
Oranges react very well. Get some real cheap ones that taste like crap so you don't feel bad shooting at them. They make a real nice "plop" sound with a .22, and explode like a mofo with something like 7.62x39.
 
Oranges are really good for shooting with a 400fps BB gun, I know that much. Plus, it juices up the inside nice, and it usually goes straight through.
 
Eggs - what the hell is Egg classified as anyway?

Pomegrantes are interesting...

Any Melon....I prefer to shoot Watermelon ( I'm burned out on them) . I eat the Canteloupe and Honeydew and I shoot the watermelons.

Pumpkins....

For fun find a wooden decorative apple and Pumpkin ( or other fruit for that matter) Set up and let someone that does not know shoot it with a .22lr. They know they hit the apple ( it fell) it didn't blow up...Drives them crazy until they walk downrange. :)
 
I've got a bunch of native trees growing right on my property that work: osage orange. Those are the trees with the big green balls on them that look like green grapefruits with warts. The trees are good to have around and are used to make some things like recurve bows. The actual fruit is strange. If you try to cut one in half you will discover that they are almost like cauliflower. Not as solid as they appear. And they have this slimy juice inside as well that sticks to your hands. But shoot them with a hot 9mm or .357 and they just explode. Then I discovered that they floated (a little) so I chuck them in the creek and blast them. Gives a good moving target as they drift with the current and when you hit them they go away. But without leaving any "debris" behind to clean up.

They don't do much if you shoot them with .45 Colt cowboy loads or something but hit them with a light, fast hollow point when they are full grown and you will be surprised!

I've had cheap thrills from shooting

cans of cheap soda. Shaken, not stirred!

They tend to explode nicely. Very messy!

Oh, it has to be fruit? OK, generic grape soda! :D
 
Plain ol ''taters ... not too expensive ... they are ammo for spud cannon and ... when shot at by any cal disintigrate very satisfactorily. Even the lowly HP .22's do a good job.

Perhaps best of all - tho wicked wasteful .. the ubiquitous water melon ... at 100 yds with HP or SP rifle ammo ..... :evil: :D
 
Zucchini explode nicely, and are dirt-cheap and plentiful besides.

At the height of the zucchini season is the only time country people lock their doors -- to prevent other people from breaking in and leaving zucchini.

Haven't done it yet, but I'm going to as soon as I can. At Wal-mart they have these goofy stuffed chickens that people use for decoration. I have to admit, they look very real. Real enough that I think they'd make a great reactive target.
 
I second apples and oranges. You can get them in the 5lb bags. The bags will give you two different fruits for different reactive targets. When you finish shooting there is no clean up. They either feed the local critters or degrade into the soil.

Ballons are a lot of fun but they can leave a lot of debris to clean up.

When I was a kid I watched an outdoor show where the guy was hunting with a 44 mag. He tossed a grapefruit in the air and atomized it. Very spectacular. I also used to keep the walnut population in check with my 22 rifle. Too young and stupid to worry about where the bullets may be coming down. Fortunately there were only about 8 houses within range and no one ever mentioned any damage.
