Whatever pistol you can shoot well. It should serve to get you to your 12 gauge, nothing more, nothing less. Better yet, keep the 12 gauge and the pistol near you.

in my nightstand Springer GI 230 hollow points any flavor.condition 3 with one extra mag.45 acp = good stopping power and less muzzle flash.in her (NY born Marine) Sig 226 with doubletap 124 GD, condition 3 with three mags loaded w/10 rounds each.this should get us to the closet(ten feet) where the 870 and AR15 stay. a side note notice her weapons required no retraining from milatary.

At the moment, an SP101, because its inches from my hand. Assuming I have a bit of warning, a GP100 is in the same room; 4"-barrel .357 mag ballistics do trump 2.25", and the GP100 has another shot on board. Assuming the trouble comes from the direction of the street, withdrawing to the bedroom will put me in reach of my SIG P229 duty pistol, though I don't consider it an improvement on the GP100 until the sixgun needs a reload, or until it gets dark, because the SIG has a light rail. So, my answer is based on the situation at a given moment in time. As for the aforementioned blinding flash of the .357, somebody needs to buy some fresh premium duty ammo, and not use older duty ammo, or currently produced cheap ammo.

Something that is very important that everyone has left out is a silenced weapon. Trust me, you do not want to fire a decent caliber size gun 9mm, .357, .40, .45 etc in pitch black and in a enclosed room. You better make the first shot, cause you will probably be dazed, confused, deaf etc. I am going by memory but i think any of those guns are in teh 160-170 decibels range. And the muzzle flash will blind you.

I would say buy a tactical version of a Sig, HK etc and put a nice silencer on it. So at least when its time to go bang indoors, you actually give yourself a chance:) Just my 2cents!

That is one fact for certain. Although in most states you have to have a tax stamp. I would not use a ported pistol, such as a Glock 17C or 19C. I can't even imagine how that would ring the ears.
