Capacity VS Caliber - Home Defense

I still remember the class shot off at Gunsite.

Drop two round targets on posts (7 yards, 5 yards), mandatory reload, drop the third post target (3 yards), then shoot the split pepper popper.

Split on the bottom wins.

As I did the mandatory reload I noticed the guy I was paired with reloading his 'Wonder 9' with the huge double stack mag.

I figured this was going to be close.
I dropped the third post target and hit the split popper.

I then looked at his targets.

He had not hit a single one yet.

The two younger guys (early 20s) had everyone beat for speed.

Their targets also looked like a shotgun even at 3 yards.

Bill Halverson (class range-master & instructor) uttered his famous "You can't miss fast enough to win."

For a HD gun, there is no need to compromise. No need to conceal it or be readily portable. I choose (and keep at the bedside) 7 rounds of 00 buck in a 18" 12 guage.

All My Pistols are Hi-Cap Mags.

First off, I spent almost 9 years undercover LE. Never been in a Gun Battle that lasted 2 or 3 rounds. Either I am Trigger Happy [ which is entirely possible! ] or just NOT that Lucky! My HD and Car And Personal defensive Pistols are 9mm, .40 and .45acp. NOT ANY of them have Low Cap Mags! My Two Beretta 9mm's even Have 20 RD mags! My XD 9mm's 19RD mags. My SW MP .40 15rd mags. My XDM .45's 13rd mags Hell even my Taurus .45acp [model 845] has 12rd mags. I have never been a minimalist. I think everyone should keep in mind that in a REAL gun battle [Not like TV] Conserve your rounds , Have good cover and Always keep you eye on where the Bad guy or Guys are! If you have a Spouse teach her to shoot and dial 911. And if you Believe-Pray! God is ALWAYS on the side of the Good Guy!

The Best to All!

Frank

My universal rules of gun fighting from 34 years of LE...

1. Any gun is better than no gun.
2. The mere presence of a gun deescalates most incidents.
3. If you do have to shoot, he who gets there first with the most usually wins.
4. Shot placement in vital areas is more important than caliber
5. I never heard anyone say they wished they had a smaller gun or less ammo even it they only had to shoot a couple times. Universally there is a thought that bigger and more is better.

While I have multiple 9mms and .45s my HD gun is a Glock 22. Best choice of caliber, capacity and control-ability. IMO.

15+1+15 (spare magazine) of Speer Gold Dot 9mm 147gr GDHP from a Glock 19 Gen 4 with XS Big Dot sights. It's my concealed carry weapon, my HD weapon, and my everything else weapon. I have 2 copies, as well as a Glock 23 Gen 4, and I typically live fire once/week and do dry work 2-3 times/week.

I want the best possible chance to put service caliber rounds on target, quickly, and to have enough for anyone who decides to come to the party.

The controllability factor becomes more prominent for anyone who opts to use a handgun for defense, and doesn't use weapon mounted lights. I don't currently have a WML, so I value 1 hand control quite a bit.

I like both .45 ACP, and 9MM, but lately I have been preferring the capacity of a full size 9MM like my CZ-75B, or Beretta 92FS. Many home invasions have multiple intruders.

I kinda hedge my bets ... the ready guns in the house are a SIG P220 with weapon-mounted light and extended 10-round mag in it right next to a SIG P226 with a Mec-Gar Plus-2 20-round mag ... Mossy under the bed and an M-4 in the closet.

I have 2 guns with 3-5 mags each on the nightstand. I put my carry "around the house", "to bed on top of the jewelry box with 5 mags, for it in the box along with either a glock 9 or 45, with 2 more mags in the box. More than that gets a little out of hand if I need a tissue. I am picking up a CZ tomorrow with 17 rounder's so that will take the position of one of the glocks. All guns have night sights and lights.

9mm is my chosen caliber for HD and CC in my Glock 19. With proper ammo I have plenty of punch and capacity.

IMO the difference in stopping power between 9mm, .40 and .45 is so slight that choosing one or the other for this purpose or that purpose is splitting hairs. Just pick you caliber of choice and go with it.

Bedside I keep my Springfield 1911, that should get me to my closet where my Remington 870 and AR await. Pistol is a tool to get to the real hardware :neener:
