Hi there I wanted to get a semi-auto shottie the only ones I have research on is the Saiga, and the Mossberg 930 SPX. What other choices are there for semi-auto shotguns? Is tube fed better than mag fed for shotguns?

if moneys no object go for one of these four, If you can find them - fn herstal slp....beretta 1201 fp....benelli m1....remington 1187 police

if you cant spend as much, go with a mossberg 930. all great guns. not a fan of the looks/association of the Saiga, at all

Remington 11-87 or a used Beretta 1201fp.

Why are they best? No reason, I just have experience with these.

You really need training over equipment to get the "best" out of a SD shotgun.

i have experience with the Benelli, Beretta, Remington, FN and the Saiga (in 20ga). haven't shot a Mossy 930 yet...only the pumps.

my choice would be the FN SLP ahead of the Benelli or Berreta. the Mossy is close to the FN, but the quality isn't there from my inspection.

the Saiga is just very cool looking

For home defense that Mossberg SPX is going to be just fine.

Unless you're shooting competitively, the Benelli is really a lot of money for a scattergun.

I used to own a Saiga 12 and its a great shotgun, but honestly not all that useful for anything other than home defense. It wasn't a great clays gun and if I would have tried to shoot 3-gun with it, It would have put me in "Open Class" ... so as a beginner I'd have been slaughtered.

We always idolize that which we cannot have, or in this case AFFORD.

i.e. Dominican Cigars are better than Cuban cigars, but Cuban's are not easy to get so they are the best. Stoli vodka used to be the TOP of the TOP shelf because it was difficult to get it, now that it is freely available Absolute is considered better...

I would be hard pressed to take an auto over a pump. It is a lot more money and maintenance with a questionalbe payoff. Many of the same problems that exist for a pump exist for a Semi, and then the added problems of the recoil / gas mechanisms...

We dont adore, lust or want anything. We walk into a gun shop with good ideas of what we wanted and focused on that. Some of the weapons we considered happened to include Benellis and other brands that were pricy but not more than what we had on hand that night.

When one is in a sufficient cash position to buy, gun shopping is fun experience yes?

They just did not fit our hands right and had introduced issues like maintaince and high ammuntion usage rates.

Can you imagine a local Jury grilling us in the Courthouse for having a Pancor Shotgun for home defense with full auto? Pull trigger one time and hose bad guy off the walls and out of the back door, problem solved; add fresh drywall and carpet.

No thanks.

Best defensive Semi Auto?

Whichever one you've shot a couple thousand rounds through.

Glitchless.

Next question....

I've shot most of them and the only semi-auto that would ever stand a chance of replacing my beloved Remington 870 as the first line of defence is the Benelli M2 Tactical.

Basically all major firearm manufacturers produce or at least import a semi automatic shotgun to some degree.

Take Dave's advice. Most guns that are made today function well, but you should only trust what has proved its worth to you. A fancy name or a tactical stock don't mean anything if you cannot trust it too save your life.

Had two different Benellis, sold both. Never could get used to the controls. I do like the idea of the 1100 Special Field or 11-87 and would cheerfully use one. Very gun savvy friend uses a 20 ga 100 Special Field (or what ever the designation is for the straight stocked version).

Regardless of what you buy, shoot the heck out of it so you know what your doing. :D

What's up with the "we" stuff? Sounds creapy like a borg or gollum

On the OP's question, the most reliable semi auto would be an A5 type design. Whether it is a browning or remington or savage they are dead nuts reliable.

Whatever gun that fits you and you can hit with. If you have any friends that shoot trap or sporting clays or skeet or whatever, hang around with them and try out their guns. If you can hit reasonably with a gun, then the gun probably fits you OK. Get that model gun suitably modified for HD. When I say suitably modified, I mean shorter barrel, a mag extension (maybe), a butt cuff for extra ammo, and maybe a light-that is all you will need, save the money for extra stuff and use it for ammo and training.

+1 for the Benneli tactical line of shotguns. Just buy and shoot. You won't need any further gizmos. Dead reliable out of the box

My HD shotgun is a Remington Model 11 I found at a gun show for $160.00. I had the barrel cut to 18" and shot the heck out of it with Federal Tactical OO Buckshot to make sure it was dead reliable....sweet!

If it was good enough for Frank Hamer and Charlie Askins who shot bad guys by the carload, then it's good enough for me.
