I've been looking at a few semi-auto tactical shotguns. I don't have a semi shotgun so I figured this would be a good reason to get one :) I have my eye on 3 models. Here are my choices so far, what do you think.

1. Saiga 12. 19" barrel, Chambered for 2-3/4" and 3". Can't find one anywhere. 5 round magazine and (10 round magazine can't find them either).

2. Remington 1100 Tac-2. 18" barrel, chambered for 2-3/4" only. 6+1 capacity.

3. Mossberg 930 SPX. 18.5" barrel, Don't know the chamber size. 7+1.

4. Benneli tactical is out of my price range and only has a 4+1 capacity
What do you guys think. Beautiful gun though.

I just got a 930 SPX at a gun show Saturady. I had basicly talked myself out of them until I saw it in person. Very nice gun, I have only had the chance to shoot 4 shells from it but i hope to get a review up on my new website by early next week.

As for the Saiga just as you said to hard to find, is it superior to "standard" shotguns? Im inclined to say yes but I have no experince with them, as of right now they seem to hard to find and the higher capsity mags are just as hard to get as the gun

Thanks Steve, Can't wait to here the review on the Mossberg.

I have seen vids and read alot about the Saiga 12, looks like it would be very easy to field strip and clean. I have no experience with the other 2.

The Saigas come in periodically; you have to have money in hand when they show up. They usually sell out quickly.

AGP Arms makes the 10-round mags; they also show up periodically.

Take a look at what the successful Three-Gun competitors use. They run the most number of rounds in as close as you can get to real-world scenerios without getting your fanny shot-off. While you see the odd Saiga or Mossburg, mostly you'll see Remingtons & Benellis.

First, they might be sponsored, and have to use whatever is given them. Second, "as close as you can get to real-world scenerios"? Really? 3-gun uses scads of "select slug" drills that are almost never used in real life.

There was a lengthy thread on another forum asking police/mil if they had ever used select slug in real life, and the answer was not one person had. Select slug is a Cooperism.

Here's a thread over on Brian Enos's forum (big 3-gun shooter) that says Saigas and mag-fed shotguns take over on high round count stages.

I have a Benelli M1 Super 90 that I purchased used. The price is high because of the quality. They are really well made, a very simple design, and much easier to clean than a gas operated gun.

I don't understand the 4+1 capacity?? Mine is a 7+1 with the factory installed mag extension.

The rest of your guns on the list I have heard good things about. One thing that I have heard about the Mossberg is that it is heavy but I have not had the chance to shoot one.

Yes, you're right, the front-office (sponser) guys will always have the last word about what their shooters run. My input really wasn't based on the business issues.

Yep, right again. It's difficult/impossible (and a continuing debate) for ANY form of gun-sport competition to accurately represent the conditions of armed combat.

But I'm unaware any well-funded tactical team (military or LE) who opts to use Saiga shotguns. Are there any?

"Hi, this is Remington. We'll give you an 11-87 for free, and 200 rounds a week."

"No, I'd rather pay $800 for my own Saiga and pay for my own ammo too. Thanks anyway."

Not gonna happen. Saiga importers like EAA aren't going to sponsor people because they don't have the big money or margins to do so. Though it would be cool to see Izhmash sponsor some shooters to see how they do.

Thanks for the help guys. I got prices on all 3 today. I'm going to wait a month or 2 for the Saiga and if they don't come in by then I'll buy one of the others.

Yeah, that 4+1 capacity for the Benelli sucks. But there are other consolations.

it's not included in your original choices, but you might be overlooking the FN SLP (if you want a 18" bbl) and Mk-1 (if you want the 22" and 2 extra rounds)

the SLP shoots softer than the Remie and faster than the Benelli

+1 for the SLP, our company shooter Ron loves his. He has the 18" barreled 6+1 version. It cycles quick but not that quick. The short stroke gas system in it works well but has a little stiffer kick but not as nasty as the Benelli. I like to piss him off when we go out to demo shoots because we'll run head-to-head for quickest time on a silhouette target and I can get 8rds out of our cheap Legacy semi-auto and on target quicker than he can get 7rds out of the SLP. We got a brake on the Legacy and some other go-fast tricks so it isn't really fair, but its fun to watch him get miffed anyways :neener:

I picked up a 21" 11-87 for 399 on gunbroker with 2 barrels. Sold the rifled slug barrel for 150 so I have 249 in the gun (300 if you count the shipping and transfer fee). Popped a Choate 3 shot extension on it for 30 bucks and I have a very nice "tactical" semiauto for a little over 300.00.

Runs like a top.

My point, shop the used market.

My other point........Remington.........any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

i love my 930SPX

it eats what ever i feed it.

you should at least look at one in person before you buy anything else, you might just fall in love with it ;)

BTW it has a 3 inch chamber :D

I've heard great things about the 930, and the Saiga is neat... But you couldn't pry me away from my Remington 1100 Tac-4 :D

I'd go for the mossberg. IIRC, it has a 3" or more chamber, which is great so that you can use a variety of rounds and sizes other than just 2-3/4" shells. I'm also partial to larger capacity guns when I think 'tactical', which makes the mossberg a good choice there.

4. Benneli tactical is out of my price range and only has a 4+1 capacity
What do you guys think. Beautiful gun though.

It's only 4 + 1 using 3" shells, with 2-3/4" shells the stock tube will hold 5 + 1, with an extension it's 6 + 1 with 3" shells and 7 + 1 with 2-3/4" shells.

Floating a shell also adds 1 to the max capacity for a total of 8 with 3" shells or 9 with with 2-3/4" shells.

Agree, see my initial reactions to my new SLP posted earlier this week. I am very impressed. The fact that it's hundreds less than an 11-87 and 2/3 the cost of an M4 is worth noting also.

I have my name on the wiating list and will be purchasing a S12 as soon as the shippment comes in.

It will ended up converted and probably end up being a SBS too. A tromix SBS is a very fine weapon and is my first choice for home defense.
