With all the experience and shooting knowledge in this website can anyone offer suggestions to me for the best lead bullets to reload for my SA Trophy Match 45acp.
I would be most appreciative for any input. Thanks,
Just about the time you work up a load for a commercial cast bullet, the supply runs out. Then you may have to mess around again working up a load.
One of the advantages of the.45 ACP is its easy to work up home cast bullets for you firearm.
I cast a couple of different SWC's for my 1911 and they all shoot great.
One mold is the H&G #130 which falls around 195grs with my alloy, another is the H&G 68 as already mentioned, mine drop about 205grs. And last but certainly not least is the Lyman 452460, but the other molds are 4 and 6 cavity and this one is only a 2 so it don't see much use. In fact a friend has been eyeballing it pretty hard when he comes over and might be working me a trade on it soon.
For the most prat though something in one of the 200'ish grain SWC designs should feed and shoot just fine. I know there are literally tons of them put down range every month or so all across the country.
Most commercial casters offer them as well, but I find it more fun, and cheaper to pour my own.
I have target shooting buds who swear at the 185's for 50 paper punchings. I shot tens of thousands of H&G 68's, which were all at 200 grain. The 230 LRN is accurate, feeds through everything, and if you have never loaded a 45ACP for a M1911, that is what I would suggest. It is hard to screw up with a 230 LRN.
I am in the same camp. If a 45 won't shoot a 200 SWC accurately, that dog just won't hunt. I will say that the 230 may be better in a 1911 that has feeding issues. YMMV
200gr SWC for me. HP-38 / W231 is my preferred powder but I've also used Red Dot, Bullseye, and Unique. 4.0 gr of Bullseye is accurate, 5.6gr of HP-38 is my everyday load.
I've used bullets from Missouri Bullet, Penn, and Mastercast (Illinois.) The most accurate was an old box of Bull-X I picked up at a meet.
What do you want the bullet to do?
If you want to shoot a service load, then 230gn FMJ-RN or L-RN.
For accuracy, a 200gn L-SWC or 185gn L-SWCHP or 185gn JHP. The L-SWC should have a long nose and should be as close to a clone of the H&G #68 as possible. The JHP should say "Barnes" if you can afford it.
For self-defense, what ever you are comfortable with--I want a JHP that will have some hope of expanding.
I prefer:
Moly-koted swaged 200gn L-SWC from Precision Bullets
Swaged 200gn L-SWC from Zero Bullets
Cast 200gn L-SWC from mastercastbullets.com
