Best little big gun?

I would agree that the Browning action is not the best I have ever come across, and I have given thought to using a Turkish Mauser action as a it's base if I could find one for cheap, but this action has the advantage of already being in my possession. If I could find an old Savage I could offset the extra cost by being able to do the barrel swap on my own. All of that has been running through my head for a week now.

No need to ditch the rifle because its Japan made. Many in the firearms world enjoy German autos, let alone milsurp German rifles and high quality German optics. We also don't seem to bat an eye at Japan made electronics, as most households have at least a couple from Japan. If you dislike the rifle then grab another, but hating it due to its origins is a silly complaints. That initial purchase is long over. Now it's a transaction from American to another. Having a smith rebarrel it will be more in country money spent on good American skill and labor. At this point, Japan will not see a dime regardless of what you do with that rifle. Do what makes you happy and ignore those with nothing but blind hate.

LOL no I don't have an issue with the Japanese made part, that does not bother me, it is the somewhat gritty bolt and vuage feel that are the reason it is not my first choice in actions, though as I said the stock design is quite nice and the flipdown magazine is fantastic, that is what I do like about the gun, but if I had a sprotarized Mauser or old Savage laying around that needed to be re-barreled too, that would be a no contest :D

358 Win: you can load cheap cast pistol bullets and make brass from reformed surplus 7.62 (308). It will be the cheapest to shoot center fire rifle you own, and trigger time is what makes an accurate shooter. You can make and shoot 500 rounds for less that 100 using jacketed and commercial brass in another caliber.

Who wouldn't want a centerfield rifle that's cheap to shoot?

Only thing better then cheap is cheap and effective. I don't have the gear to do it yet but I want to try casting bullets, I figure the 35 cal is much better suited to that then my smaller calibers. I get plenty of trigger time (I live right next door to a shooting range :D ) my reloading space/gear is rather limited but I am a pretty good shot both on the bench and in the field.

A .358 200gr bullet at 2400fps might be a tad light for polar bears, but it should take down anything else in North America with no problem. I would call that effective.

358 Win is the PERFECT cast bullet rifle caliber. You can use use it to its full capabilities with cast bullets provided you get your sizing, alloy and lube right.
