I use 338 RCM here in Alaska.

Handloading can be tricky though, because handloads can not keep up with factory loads because Hornady has a super secret recipe.

I have some of their Superformance powder, but need to track down some recipes to see if I can get close to "box" ammo.

But, it's a great caliber of it took off. Same with 325 WSM.

I suppose range is up to 500 yards max for target, 300 to 400 on game of we are capable of repeatable results in a small enough group

For this, on any North American Big Game, I’m not convinced I should even bother with a magnum cartridge. A 6.5 creed or 7-08 AI (or 7 SAW) would do what you’re asking with 1/3 less powder, less blast, and less recoil, AND better brass available.

Then again, when I spend the money for out of state tags, with a hand comfortable taking game out to around 750 yards in most conditions, I take a 300win mag afield.
