Keb got me thinking about map sets and apps for smartphones in a previous thread so I wanted to ask.....what apps are you using for hunting and outdoors? I have a Casio Commando 4G LTE Verizon phone that has some good apps but I want something that has topo capability.

I normally load my Garmin Rino with topos for the area I hunt but why carry both? The phone has a better screen and reception is good out in the bush.

What say you?

Google maps walked me out of the woods after tracking a friends deer several times.
Just a blue dot with an arrow in the direction the phone is pointing but surprisingly accurate.

Often you are closer to a creek or trail than you think.

Sports Tracker is a very cool app I use to track my walks, golf, and runs. It records how far you travel, avg speed, total time, and applies your route to google maps. Even keeps a log of all your events. Fun free app.

Try it out on a jog or walk in your neighborhood and see how you like it.

+1 for google maps. I type in the coordinates of my property markers and use it to post my property every year. You can if use it "offline" if you save the map before hand.

I use Trimble GPS Hunt Pro. It took a while to figure things out but it works well for me because it has downloadable maps that you can use in areas that you don't get signal. Some maps are free, some maps cost money. Bing aerial maps and topo maps from Mytopo are FREE. I think I had to pay around $5 for the app itself, but it is well worth it. You can transfer from phone to phone for free when you upgrade phones.

The one thing I don't like about it is that each individual map you download is limited to 200MB but you can download as many as your phone memory will allow. The 200MB file size limits the size of your maps. When hunting large tracts of land, you have to break your maps into segments (how big depends on your map specs...just aerial, aerial and topo, zoom levels, etc). On smaller tracts of land this isn't as big of an issue for me. With limiting zoom levels and doing aerial only, I can get upwards of 3000 acres into one 200mb file. If you add the topo layer, it cuts it down significantly.

Bottom line...good app but not great. All things considered, well worth the $$$.

I am interested in this topic as well. Google Maps for Android used to have a topographical option that was great for hiking, but they tossed it out along with several other features in a recent update. I've been looking for a new Map App for a while now. Will try out a few recommended here.

I use an app on the iphone called Topo Maps.....it's a real simple app that lets you download the USGS Topographical Map. It may not be the best. But it is very simple and gives me what I need to look at the terrain

If you end up getting both Topo Maps and GAIAGPS. Let me know which one you like better and why. I was thinking about trying GAIAGPS. But for $20 I just haven't felt the need.

Gaia permanent purchase

Well, I will add this. When you buy it once, it can be added free to your other devices, and if you buy a new phone.

that's one of the iphone benefits too. I have had 3 or 4 different iphones and still have the apps from all of them...plus they also show up on my wife and kids phones...and our ipads too.

TopoMaps on iPhone ... been using it for years and have tried EVERY other app available .... nothing beats topomaps for pure functiionality if you ask me....
