I'm looking for the better Mosin-Nagant model for the "colder conditions" here in AK
M44?
91/30?

Or maybe a Mauser?

Theyre low-priced and look addictive :D

I've got a Finn 28/30. I'd get that or a Finn M39. Those two are often cited as highly accurate Mosins.

I think any of them would be OK in the cold however.

Interesting side note regarding the M 28/30 (from Surplusrifle.com):

The m/28 came into its fame when Finnish Sniper Simo Häyhä was credited with over 500 Soviet soldier kills during the Winter War, while carrying the m/28.

Edit: I'd get the M39 over the M28/30 unless you are interested in the rarer one. M28/30 parts can be a pain to find-- although they do have a lot of parts in common with the M39

The Soviet union is COLD at times. Both are fine. The short carbine would probably be more to your liking as it's shorter. I picked up a laminate M44 from Interordinance that *gleams* it's so perfect I did not see any marks that it had been used. It looks like it came of the assembly line yesterday. Brown bear and Norma have soft points, if you get boxer brass save it, you can probably sell it for a good price or reload it. :)

I saved a least a hundred because I have a C&R. :neener:

M44 if you're primarily in brushy terrain where the length of a 91/30 could hinder you more then help. Wide open spaces with free range I'd go with the 91/30 and a comfortable sling (Keep in mind, these things are a bit on the heavy side)

If you can find a Finn though, grab it

They are all made to work well in extreme cold. The pick would be the ones that have the three piece stocks, they are set up to not distort in extreme cold. If it is that cold and you are not defending your country, you shouldn't be out there :D

Get the M38 if you decide to go the "short and handy" route. Saves a pound or two off the business end of the rifle, and thusly is better balanced. Unless, of course, you plan to cook whatever you shoot over an open fire, then the bayo can be used like a hot dog stick. Heck, you could pretty much just stick the chunk of meat on the extended bayo, then touch off another round or two and just bypass the open fire....:)

hehe... he's in Alaska-- defending the northern border from illegal polar bear immigration.

I don't think the weather is all that much of a choice for him.

Forget about a Mosin Nagant.....

global warming is here and a rifle made in ancient times in northern Russia, will not work properly in a warm climate...........It gets colder in Russia than it does in Alaska. That said, look for any rifle with a boxed SA stamped on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver with a good bore. This will indicate the Finns used this rifle and they made sure they shot well before issuing them to the troops..........chris3

Start from the top, get a M-39. Personally, I prefer the straight stock and different style rear sight on the M-27, but any Finn-built Mosin or SA marked Mosin rifle is well worth the money.

Oh piddle.

I've used at least three of my Mosin Nagants in 90+ degree temps out here, getting them hot enough to boil cosmoline out of secret crevices in the handguard. They run just fine in hot or cold, although high humidity will promote quicker rust formation while using corrosive ammo.

Go with the shorter carbine (M38 or M44) for a bush gun, shorter barrel, handy, and reliable. Some of the M44's can be found in VERY good condition. Most of the M38's I've seen around here have been counter-bored.

I gotta agree about the carbine lenths-- depending on what you want to do with it.

I am going to get someone to video me next deer season trying to get my M28/30 into my deer stand. At least somone will make money from my death when I fall and break my neck.

About the global warming... I think he was joking around. :D

John

hehe... Global Warming hasnt phased us a bit, we've been drowning in -30 weather for a solid week and beyond.

The shorter versions sound good... I'll check into them
