best natural disaster weapon?

so what do you guys think is the best self defense natural disaster weapon is? from state wide power outage, to a massive flood or anything that is beyond the reach of law enforcement? id say that semi auto is a necessity unless your s*** hot with a marlin 336, so is mobility, portability and knock down power are in there too?

auto 12 gauge with slug and 00 buck? but range would be an issue...

6.8 ar? but ammo is tough to find...

M1a? but its expensive and might be a touch big for CQB...

this is not a fantasy thread it has practical purpose i was just having fun with the wording earlier TALIV... so what do yall think?

What is a gun going to do against a power outage or a flood? Are you going to shoot at steel and make sparks to fight the power outage or are you going to shoot at the flood water to keep your home safe and dry? Your best bet is to habe a group of people you can trust and not lone gun it. Life ain't a movie or video game.
 
If it s the like of Los Angeles riots of the past, then be ready.
 
I remember during the LA riots, watching news stories about neighborhood shop owners banding together to prevent looting. Seems I recall a few EBRs prominently displayed.

Yeah, good neighbors and tall fences are a must. But, a good rifle is also worth having.

Actually mags i was really betting on using a gun to fight off flood water but now that you have opened my eye to the reality of how dumb i am... i should get sand bags, a paddle a some answers from so mature members.
but for people who dont feel like being a smart ass, what would be a good all around utility rifle?
 
Brave man -- resurrected this thread from a closed SHTF weapon to this premise. OK

AR is the obvious choice to me though my 20" light Mossberg 590 12 ga. with a polychoke and 0 Buckshot is a decent alternative, depending.

I prefer a down played approach. I would have a reliable pistol such as a Glock 23 for regular carry, probably outside carry with a shirt covering; and a Mini 14 rifle and pump shotgun which are kept behind the scenes to defend the home place as apposed to visably carring it down the street. Out in the country, do whatever you like.

Keep sufficient firearms on hand with ammunition for the family even if they routinely do not shoot or particularly practiced with a firearm. Revolvers work here for handguns and the pump shotgun is good for around the house.

ANY .22 as long as it works and you have the ammo

Or any gun you got?? Really whats the gun worth in "this scenario (SHTF)"
How about food, water and medical aid, a reliable and actionable plan to get to better ground?

The gun is an after though
 
I hope the likes of LA riots will not happen in Texas. If so, the first sign of these rampaging thugs doing their thing will be met accordingly. We have more guns here in the hands of good people than thugs with guns.

Well I'm sure if you were stranded by high flood water a flare gun would be quiet useful, or anything else with a few tracers. Even the sound of gunfire would attract some attention to your location.

If I was gonna go with a shotgun I'd go with a good pump, simply because if your surviving less than ideal conditions you want the weapon that will be most reliable in less than ideal conditions. Practice some, ya can pump it plenty fast if you practice.

Keep in mind flood waters can push some animals out of there habitat and into yours, its easier to hit snakes and other critters with a shotgun than a rifle. Don't give me the, just use a long stick unless you are going to carry a long stick up on the roof of your house along with you when flood waters push you up there.

If I was going to take my rifle, I'd absolutely go for the AK. Accuracy at long range may not be so great but they generally will operate in the worst of conditions. Being able to hit something long range doesn't mean crap if your rifle goes click when it should go bang.

Not saying there's not any AR's that can't handle it, but keep in mind it may get dunked in mud and silt filled water. Will you have time to stop and clean it? Will you be in the middle of cleaning it when you need to put up a few tracers for a nearby aircraft to see?

If I needed to reach out and touch hard and could deal with bolt action and need it cheap I'd go with my trusty mosin nagant. You probably won't cry as much if you have to use it for a boat paddle.

Can't speak for the M1A system, never fired one.
 
In this country, probably an AR would be the best all round choice. It's good for defense, accurate, reliable, ergonomically excellent, and easy to shoot. Parts are abundant, as is ammo. And since the ammo itself is lightweight, one can carry more rounds than one could of another caliber.

If you need or want something heavier, and yet still have a rifle good for defense, an FAL or M1A would do well. An AK would be a good choice too, but I'd rather have one of the other two.

A good bolt action or lever gun in any commonly available caliber would also be a good choice -- your skill with the weapon will count for more than the type of rifle.
 
Marlin 336 30-30 with a Williams peep. As you can see in this picture, most old Marlins made before 2000 are drilled/tapped for a reciever peep:

What sort of disaster are you anticipating? Riots? Katrina type flooding? Mass forest fires? These sort of considerations will matter a great deal in your selection. I'm in Detroit so I'm not too worried about flooding, but the possibility of a riot is another story.

A general choice would be my Saiga 308 with a 16in bbl.
 
Hurricane Ike, Hurricane Rita, Tropical Storm Allison; I have been there and done that. A service-type pistol and Remington 870 suited me fine, and I didn't have to point a firearm at anyone. What is important? It is nice to have a high vehicle that is not intimidated by a few inches of water. A fuel can, filled with gasoline, is like gold when the local gas stations have to power for the pumps. A bit of food that does not require cooking to prepare, and a bit of drinking water. Wipies, for staying clean. Wipies preserve civilization!

OK, so I did keep a .308 Browning BLR in the trunk when Rita was hitting, as the area was still hosting a bunch of Katrinistas.

There is no natural disaster weapon, per se, just good, all-around, utility weapons.
 
A 336 is easy to find ammo for, easy to interchange parts, packs plenty of power out to 200+ yards, & they're cheap. They are reliable, accurate to 1MOA with a scope, carry well, and are well balanced. Lame? I don't think so. Utilitarian? Yes, all the way.
