this is just personal preferences so there is no right/wrong answers. this is based on my personal experience. I broke these categories down to three most popular centerfire handgun calibers (9, 40, 45) and polymer/all steel. so I list what I believe to be best of class in each caliber with the polymer gun first then all steel gun next.

9mm: glock 34/ cz 75, 40s&w: hk usp/ sig p229, 45acp: hk45/1911.

this is just my opinion of the last 11 years as what shot great and handled well.

here are some honorably mentioned. 9mm: m&p9/ browning high power, 40s&w: glock 22/ beretta 96, 45acp: fnx 45/ sig p220

For me, it's
.45acp 1911/Glock 30
.40 Glock 23 or 35
9mm Glock 19/23/34

The 1911 is the only all-steel pistol platform I own. I have three of them, but don't feel the need to have the weight in lesser calibers.

9mm: Glock 26/19/17, Sig P226
.45 ACP: Glock 21, 1911
.40 S&W: Glock 35 with 357 SIG conversion barrel ;)

The preference usually changes, but these days I am inclined to state the following:

9mm:
1. H&K P30
2. Sig P226 'Elite'
3. Glock 19

40 SW:
1. Sig P229 'Elite'
2. H&K USP
3. Beretta 96

45 ACP:
1. H&K USP
2. Sig P220 'Elite'
3. DW Vbob

9mm Hipower/CZ75

.40 Limited STI pistols/hipower in .40/beretta 96

.45 1911,HKUSP,Sig Sauer P220

To me "Best of" doesn't equal run of the mill average guns..

I was just asking what people thought was best in these calibers for polymer and steel guns. really I was interested to see if the same guns would be mentioned multiple times and so far a few have. I think these run of the mill average guns are pretty good. I would like to know what you consider best since these guns clearly aren't good enough. geez!!! some people think the rarest most expensive gun that can shoot a dime at 100 yards is best, when you would never know because there are not nearly enough produce or in the field. This is just PERSONAL OPINIONS. the guns mentioned so far are everyday combat proven firearms.

i wouldn't be too surprised. This thread is kinda like asking for war. Anytime opinions are involved it'll turn south on ya.

9mm: SR9c cause that's what I have. Love it
40cal: P91dc cause thats what i have. I'm sure there is better but it shoots great.
45cal: 1911 platform. not getting into brands, that's a hole different battle.

I'd be curious if .380 has worked it's way into the most popular list, edging out the 40cal.
Last couple of years the 380 has gained a lot of ground in the ccw market. During this rush on ammo, 40cal has been readily available in surplus while every other slot was empty. Seem like 40 has had somewhat of a falling out.

Disclaimer: 45 is my preferred round, the only reason I go to a smaller round is to CCW a smaller gun.

45acp fullsize: DW Valor
45acp compact: DW ECO, Springfield XDS

40sw: Glock23

9: Glock 19, Glock 26, Kahr Pm9, Kahr P9

380 auto: Kahr P380

.22??
