Best of the cheap Colt SAA clones?

I've got 2 Cimarron Uberti(s). Both required some work out of the box. I have 3 of the Uberti black powder revolvers that have never given any problems. Uberti is a pretty good gun


I have a friend and co-worker who has a pair of Pietta 1858s. Beautiful guns that have never given problems.

You would most likely be happy with either brand. Just keep in mind that you are not buying a $1500 high end SAA and small glitches are usually an easy fix. Most will be great shooters out of the box. There are a lot of them sold and you will only hear about the small percentage that have a hiccup.

I would not waste my money buying a Uberti from an importer who basically puts their name on the gun and claims higher QC. My personal experience is that there is no difference in the basic gun.
 
Ruger is best but not a copy of a SAA Colt. The best Copy is a USFA, but expensive. Still of SA pistols can't go wrong with a Ruger!
 
Another Vaquero vote. A Ruger can be carried safely with 6, Colt and clones are only safe with 5 and hammer down on an empty chamber
 
Another one you might want to consider is the Beretta Stampede, also made by Uberti. I have been very pleased with mine, both in its construction and performance,
 
I stick with the later model Uberti-made guns. IMHO, they are better than anything made by Pietta. I like to buy from Dixie Gun Works because I can drive there and inspect the gun before purchase. If I'm ordering one, I get it from Cimarron.

When what you want is a traditional SAA or replica, no New Model Ruger will do!
 
IMHO, I prefer the standard Colt SAA mechanism even if you do have to keep one of the chambers unloaded. It's part of the charm..........and also why I dislike Rugers. Each to his own, I guess.

There's also the EAA Bounty Hunter, which is a German-made SAA clone that uses the half-cock-to-load mechanism like the original Colts, but includes a transfer bar safety a la Ruger that makes it safe to carry with all six loaded. Bud's has a 4-1/2" .45 Colt for $352.00, and this pistol was very favorably reviewed on Gunblast.com and in John Taffin's "Single Action Sixguns".
 
I have a Uberti 1873 Cattleman New Model Brass and a Cimmaron Model P.
(they're identical except the Uberti has a brass backstrap & trigger guard)

If I were doing it again, I wouldn't bother with the Cimmaron.
When I got it, all the screws were loose, and it's not quite as accurate as the Uberti brand.

The Cimmaron is a nice gun, but I like the Uberti just a tiny bit better.

And I like the authenticity of having the firing pin on the hammer.

None of that safety crap for me. :eek:
 
It's my understanding that Cimarron and Taylor use Uberti parts, but, at least to some extent, put the guns together themselves. However, I have no personal experience with those and can't compare them to regular Uberti's.
 
No. Uberti makes the guns, Cimarron and Taylor's merely import them. The only difference is the importer's name gets stamped on them. Along with others, such as Dixie Gun Works, as I mentioned.

USPFA, early on, imported Uberti parts, doing their own fitting and finishing. That is, until switching to all domestically sourced parts.
 
Craig has it- neither Taylor's nor Cimarron are makers, they're just importers.
Each contracts with Uberti for features & configurations, but both buy guns from the same source.

Except for those rare variations, most of your 3rd generation SAA's are a very poor investment.


If you want a vastly better sixgun at roughly double the price, buy a USFA.
 
Yes. I know that Rugers have the transfer bar and you can open the gate without half-cock, which is why I don't want one. I want something that really feels old school.

There's a kit to fix that "problem". It gives you the half-cock and the 4 clicks when you cock the hammer. I'm sorry I don't remember who does the conversion but I'm sure you can find it on the net. I think it's LongHunter.

Even though I think the Pietta guns are much better than the Uberti guns I have to go with the Taylor gun from the 3 your listed. Taylor does get their parts from Uberti but I think they assemble them here in the USA and make sure the fit & finish is much better than what you get directly from Uberti.
 
The half-cock "kit" for Rugers is made by Power Custom. It's a very good system and works well. Not quite the feel of a traditional gun but quite good. Only two clicks though. Alpha Precision also offers a half cock conversion utilizing the original parts.

Once again, Taylor's does not build guns. They simply import them from Uberti with their name on them. Just like Cimarron and Dixie Gun Works.
 
Love my Colt, boys. Sorry. Not for sale at any price....Well maybe...

And you can load all 6 chambers and rest the hammer between cylinders. Old gun slinger trick.
