A Lot Of Good Guns

12 years ago, I would have said the GLOCK 19, no queston. Now I am shooting the BERETTA 92/96 pistols and the WALTHER P-99 most of the time, so I like them. I also am a GLOCK fan, though I rarely shoot it. The feel is too different from what I shoot on the job.

I also like the SIG and used to carry one on duty. I now carry the issue H&K P2000. These are all great guns

Frankly, there are many really good pistols and the one that is best is the one that shoots best for you and is best suited to your purpose.

I would prefer a SMITH & WESSON model 57 if I were in bear country or a target .22 if I were shooting on the range alot.

Golden (jim): You are issued HK p2000. What kind of service are you in? And how do you rate P2000 performance wise? Finally, have you had a chance to fire P30, if so how do you compare it to P2000? To me there is no significant improvement.

glock 20 (10mm)
15 plus 1 (mine 17+1 super2's) capacity with greater balistics than a 357mag

For what? That's like saying "what's the best hammer?" You use different hammers for different jobs. It's the same with pistols. What are you using it for? I like the 1911a1 for personal defense, but it is the wrong tool for hunting cottontails, or deer for that matter. It's on the large/heavy side for concealed carry, so I carry an EMP for that. If I was limited to ONE handgun for all my anticipated tasks(I don't anticipate hunting Grizzly Bears), it wouldn't even be a pistol- It would be a 4" barreled .357 magnum Ruger GP100.

The best pistol IMO is any of the few that I own:

1. Beretta 92FS - I'm most accurate with this one - great quality, solid, easy to maintain, great history - loaded bedside with speer gold dots.

2. Smith M&P in .40 - I really like this gun - i'm not as sharp with it yet as my beretta but it's a great shooter, also easy to take down and maintain.

3.Glock 19 - technically it's my wife's but I still claim it! Not as much time with it as I'd like but I really enjoy shooting it.

4. Taurus 24/7 compact - a really nice CCW - still getting used to the sights but has a great grip, a really nice trigger and I personally like an external safety in a CCW - I was originally concerned about reliability but this little pistol has been a champ - not a single failure

Latest result from a TFL poll http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=278787

Glock is leading with SIG to follow.

SKWAB:

Beretta 92FS is a VERY smooth trigger pistol. I am not surprised at all that you are good with it. I use to own one in black, but now I am after INOX and want to put walnut grips on it.

Smith MP- I have no experience with sine they are not available in Pakistan.

Glock 19: My favorite pistol of all times. It is very versatile with lot of different type of ammo and magazine capacities to offer.

Taurus Compact: Well it is a decent gun, apart from being Taurus, since parts/accessories are hard to get and good luck trying to talk to some one at their customer service, especailly when you are not in the USA!

Glock 22

Plenty of power for a handgun.
Very good magazine capacity.
Light weight.
Extremely reliable.
Ammo and magazines are widely available.
Good accuracy.
Accessories are very abundant.
Nearly every gunsmith is very familiar with the Glock.
Parts are easy to replace even without a gunsmith.
You can shoot .357Sig rounds through it by installing a .357Sig barrel (no need to change the recoil spring or magazines).

Like asking a carpenter: What's the best hammer? It depends on what you're doing with it.

My personal favorite for combat shooting is 1911.

However, depends on the situation. If I was going to want something to handle a wide variety of loads-a revolver, probably .44 Mag (easier to load a big cartridge light than a small cartridge overly hot).

If I was a police chief I would want my people to use something like DAO with downstroke decocker/on-safe that is harder for the all too commonly (unfortunately) semi-trained LEO to AD when pointing at people they are not sure they want to shoot and putting back in the holster while wrestling with perps and under the influence of adrenalin, which is 99% of a LEO's weapons use.

If I was going to have to carry while dressed lightly and/or doing strenuous activity something in a .380 would be attractive for the same reason a swiss army knife is attractive-it's the one you'll have on you when the heavier stuff is too heavy and bulky to carry.

For recreational shooting I love my Ruger MkII because I can afford to shoot it A LOT.

All handguns have an applied purpose.

H&k 2000 Is Very Very Good

FIREPOWER,

I rate the H&K 2000 as near perfect. We use the LEM trigger double action only model.
My agency used the 155 grain JHP ammo in .40 S&W. This is a hot round with a lot of recoil. In the H&K it does not seem much worse than a 9m.m. +P in my GLOCK.

I have had only one misfeed which I blame on a bad mag that I was issued. Aside from that, 100% reliable for the past 2 years.

My qualification scores are the same as when I carried the BERETTA 96D, so accuracy is more than acceptable. I have not tried any really long range shots with the H&K, to see if it could equal the BERETTA at 50 and 100 yards.

The pluses for the H&K are that it is the perfect size all in one gun. This standard was set by the GLOCK 19. The 7 inch long by 5 inch high compact service gun size is large enough for most officers to get a good grip, but small enough to conceal off duty. The polymer frame makes it light, but durable.
One officer recently turned in a gun that was covered in dust from lack of routine care and it still works.

BEST OF ALL, THE RECOIL BUFFER SEEMS TO WORK AS ADVERTISED. IT IS NO MORE TIRING TO SHOOT THAN A GLOCK 19. I sold my GLOCK 22 because of the recoil and it was a larger gun.

The negatives are the HIGH COST and the less than easy field stripping. While it should be easier than a GLOCK or 1911, getting it apart has not proven that easy. High marks to BERETTA and SIG on this.

I have not fired the H&K 3000 (now the model 30), so I cannot compare it.

My agency has started using the 135 grain JHP recently. I am not sure if it is because of a perception that it is more effective or simply to cut recoil a bit. We still have many officers carrying the GLOCK 17 and there is a feeling that many of these officers might not be able to qualify on the H&K 2000 if we use the 155 grain ammo.

Glock

I think according to the THR poll it is over whelming established that Glock is the best pistol in most of the member’s opinion.

Accuracy
Reliability
Durability

And when it came to choosing Just One Handgun the response was Glock- Not 1911s or any other such pistols. In fact, the distant second is SW due to its revolver following. As for 1911 manufacturers they still don’t make up the Glock votes if we put them all together!

Lots of factors come into play with such a question. But for me, it comes down to two: the Walther P88C and the Walther P5. The 88C is a marvelous piece of engineering and craftsmanship and is worthy, I believe, of its designation as the world's finest 9mm pistol; if you want to become a believer, all you have to do is shoot one sometime. THen again, if I'm headed out to the range and want nothing but a good time with a flawless pistol, I'll often take the P5 and leave everything else behind. The accuracy of these things is amazing, and the performance is ... well, legendary. You can never be too rich, not too thin, nor have too many Walthers. :)
