Best price/performance 1911?

For a good reliable, basic 1991 at a reasonable price I'll join the chorus for the Rock Island. I recommend either the full size Tactical or Tactical II, primarily for the better sights. Great in either 45 or 9mm.

Cz 1911 would be my choice:

$750ish.

The 1911 platform is one of the easiest to shop around in and come up with a good quality gun at a good price. The ATI and RIA offerings are good guns that hover around your price range. I have seen and held the Rugers but never actually fired one.
I think most Colts and other "name brands" will be a bit higher than your budget. If the budget is $600 then that's the budget. Bringing up guns that are outside the budget opens up a totally different line of thinking. "If you can spend $500 why not go ahead and spend $3,500 and get a really nice gun" isn't how I address the question.
I use my 1911's for plinking range guns so spending $1200 doesn't make sense for what I do. I just need a gun that is dependable and easy to shoot and hit the target inside 25 yards. I have never bought a used 1911 for the above mentioned reasons. I do have a friend that has a couple of higher end guns that he bought used and he has had no issues with them.

I've seen a review or two on those, and the going opinion seems to be "steer clear." Feed and RTB failures seem to be the rule rather than the exception.

Yes, exactly the opposite from what I've read. I bought one for $350, the guy shot it exactly five rounds, and decided it was junk.
I was far from surprised that it had FTF's when I looked at the magazine. I put a Checkmate hybrid feed lips 8 round SS magazine with dimple in it, and of course I worked the extractor over. It runs with anything now and I really like it a lot.

I didn't know about a CZ, other than DW's.

I have a Remington R1S that is very reasonably priced, and a very good shooter. I recently picked up a Colt 1911 and although it's a good bit pricier than the R1S, but the two are very comparable. Look to the Remington.

Is $500-$600 reasonable?

In this price range RIA rules. ~$500 should get you one of the "Tactical" variations with better sights and other creature comforts. Spend the savings on ammo.

I've several Colts, and IMHO they are only better if you plan to sell them. My first Colt is why I've become a rather accomplished 1911 mechanic, it was terrible. Maybe the newest Colts are good, but they've been living off their reputation for a very long time.

I've single stack and double stack RIA 1911s in both .45ACP and 9mm that are all well over 10K rounds each, the single stacks are closer to 15K.

Taurus haters will pop out from the woodwork on this, but I recommend the PT1911. For the features you get, no other 1911 in that price range can touch it.
RIA's are a good 1911 also in this price range. I owned one them before I bought my PT1911AR. The Rugers are nice, particularly the Commander version. The Rem. R1 is also a good gun.
Before I bought my PT1911AR, I weighed adding the features I wanted to the RIA vs buying the PT1911, and even with me doing the work (I am a military trained Armorer and yes, back when we still had 1911's) just the parts were close enough to the cost of the new Taurus that it wasn't worthwhile for me to do all that work when I could buy the Taurus. I gave the RIA to my son. Every young man should get a 1911 for his 21st BD, right? ;)

Norinco 1911A1. Cost less than half the price of my SR1911. Works well. Trigger needed work and extractor needed replacing. Sights are bad (tiny GI-esque things).

I'm late to the party on this thread but I also have a Norinco 1911A1 and swear by it. She goes bang with each trigger pull and the bullet goes where I aim it.

It's a terrific bang for the buck. I've thought of "upgrading" to a slick 45 but can't justify it in terms of functionality.

You have a world of choices in front of you, fid a half dozen you like and go shoot as many as possible, fondle the rest and go with your gut.

I had one which was my carry M1911 until I had to sell it a couple of years ago.

Once the firing mechanism parts were replaced, it was a great gun. The frame, slide and barrels on Norincos are absolutely first rate, better than the Colts I was seeing in the late '80s. Things like the mainspring are garbage, but easily replaced.

Unfortunately, now that they can no longer be imported from China, a used one is likely to cost you as much as a brand new Rock Island.

I'd second that. I've seen a number of taurus 1911's that have been fine shooters. Perhaps not as fit and fiinished as others are, perhaps not as tight. but to gain entry into the platform. not a bad choice at all.

I can't add too much to the others here other than to add my .02 on the ruger. all USA made is a nice selling point IMO, and mine's passed the 10k mark with zero issues so far.
