I've been a long time rifle shooter, primarily milsurps. (what a blackhole)

I'm going to be purchasing a new semi auto soon but cant decide what to get. I have a Springfield 1911 GI which i love. I shot a friends XD9 and couldnt stand how far the trigger traveled before it fired. What are some reccomendations of quality semi auto's that have a short, prefereably light trigger pull? Am i looking at only single action 1911's or is there something else? What types of single action pistols are out there?

thanks in advance

Hmm you might be stuck with SAO C&L carry...I'm thinking about Sig, H&K, Beretta, etc and all the SA triggers. They all have at least some pre-travel or creep to them. Not like a good 1911 or rifle trigger. I mean I'm sure you could get some trigger work done to any of those guns though. Even an XD or Glock with a decent trigger job have some pretty sweet shootin' triggers!

Most factory triggers will be 6 lbs and over for liability purposes. On a .45 acp you probably won't find a gunsmith that will reduce the pull below 3.5 lbs. FWIW a no less than 4 lb trigger on the .45 is required in Bullseye and most other competitions for service pistol. This requirement is the result of range accidents from guns with lighter triggers.

Just about any gun can be improved with a good trigger job, esp. the 1911's, all of mine have had a trigger job done to them. My Sig 220 has a great 4lb SA trigger with just a tiny bit of slack but no creep and came that way from the factory. A friend of mine has an HK compact .45 DA/SA with a very good SA pull too.

Unless you buy semi customs or some specialty guns its a lottery on what type of trigger you get on a factory gun. These can be corrected with a trip to the gunsmith of course.

I have been very very happy with the trigger on my Dan Wesson Pointman 7 1911 .45. I have two triggers that are my favorite. That one and my Mark III Hunter .22 Ruger with an after market sear package from VQ.

Try a Glock.

Yeah, I know that it's not a true single-action trigger....but it aint a true double-action trigger either.
The stock tigger pull is only a little over 5 lbs. but the best thing about the Glock trigger is the reset.

Even though there is abit of travel for the initial pull, the reset is very short.
When I fire my G22 the recoil itself actually provides the slight amount of travel needed to reset the trigger so follow-up shots are very very fast.
It's hard for me to explain in words.
But it has a much shorter reset than my single-action CZ.

And while it does take a little time to get used to the Glock trigger, once you do, it works great.
And you can always have a lighter trigger installed.

Good luck,
Easy

IMO most of the SA triggers with SIG, HK, Beretta are pretty decent. XD's, Glocks, M&P series guns are double action only and all their triggers are not as nice as a crisp single action triiger. Another nice gun for a nice trigger is a P7 =)

Actually, this is incorrect.

The XD does have a single-action trigger.
And the Glock has neither a true single-action nor a true double-action trigger....it's kind of a hybrid between the two.

I can't say for sure what the M&P has.

What about a Hi power?

I am looking for a new semi-auto also and have only owned a 1911 before. The Hi-power keeps coming back to the top of the list.

Others I have come across that you might consider:
EAA Witness Match
CZ 75 SA

I have a Colt Defender that has had an absolutely beautiful internal setup since week one. I put another trigger in, and it's now my favorite frame for a Kimber .22 conversion --- oddly enough. Never had to touch the sear.

I also have a range favorite, a Ruger Mk III. Currently, this gun has all Volquartsen internals, plus some light "touch-up" work on the sear. The result is a distinct but VERY light two-stage, with what is probably about a 2.5 lb pull, zero creep, and no inclination to release accidentally. (I've tried repeatedly, the thing's safe.) I would not recommend working it the same way for field use, but that's me. (I keep the original parts in a small zip-loc. All of the gritty, creepy, over-travelly, pre-travelly parts :D.)

For me, it's not the pull that drives me nuts ... it's creep.

You can send an XD away for a trigger job that dramatically shortens the takeup and crisps up the break. It may cost you a little, but you will have one sweet trigger when you are done. I have two XDs that I am thinking of having this done on.
