Inspired by the Auto Fan that wanted a consensus on which revolver is best liked.

S&W N-Frame
S&W K-Frame
S&W L-Frame
Colt
Ruger
Other

The choices have been determined by the responses to bear71's thread.

"Best for what duty?"

Best for shooting. Not concealed carry, not self-defense (although all of them are fine for that). We are just considering which do you enjoy shooting the most?

"Best" revolver

I like 'em all. Most of ehat I have carried over the long years have been "N" frame Smith's...from an old M-28, 6", to my current 3" M-24-6 and a 4" M-21 and, (to just kind of sneak one in here), a neat little L frame .44 Spl 5 shot with a 3" barrel. Again...I like Colt...Smith...Ruger...( any and all)...and having carried a Charter .44 spl AND having fired it I really don't want to carry anything but the 3 I picked first...Thanks for asking

While I'm partial to the N frames overall, my 686 had me from the get-go. Next to my Python, best damn revolver I've ever owned. I like it better than my old my Python in some ways. It borders on perfection.

Best revolvers

I agree with you about the L frames. The department bought one to try, (586 w/ 6" barrel), and I worked the action until it had the sweet action of an N frame with less weight and equal accuracy. That's why I included the L frame in .44 spl in my "likes". Nice revolvers. The 586 the city bought to try was SO nice that the city kept it even after buying bottom feeders for issue. Chief said it was like the old "Company Racehorse" of the early cavalry.

I went with k-frame. To be fair I don't have an N-frame or anything "non" S&W to compare it to. I do have an L-frame, which is great but there's just something that will always be cool about the K.

All factors considered I voted Ruger, but as Ala Dan said "Best is very subjective". :scrutiny:

Big Worms.

You broke the S&W catagory into 3 sections, yet it looks like Ruger is taking the whole thing.
Maybe which revolver MFG should be...

S&W

Colt

Ruger

Other

Or you could say something like...

S&W model 27/627

S&W model 19/66

S&W model 29/629

Ruger model GP100

Ruger model SP100

Colt Python

Colt King Cobra

Colt Anaconda

Butcha can't break down some and include a complete MFG for another.

Jeff (GUNKWAZY)
Just puttin in my 2 pesos.

Best wheel guns.

Good point Jeff.
I'm thinking Smiths should just be one group. Most who have more than one also have more than one frmae size.
I also "overlooked" my leetle Taurus M-450. Probably because I shot it once and cleaned it and put it AWAY...As in AWAY. A 2" All Titanium, ('cept for springs, bbl liner, pins and screws), in .45 Colt is wheeled misery to shoot.

Your categories are all messed up. If you're going to break the Smiths down by frame, you should do the same with the Colts and break the Rugers down into their main groups. The Ruger groups for DA's should be:

Security/Speed Six
Redhawk
GP100/SP101/SRH (all share the same frame)

For Colt DA you could break them down thusly:

New Service and variations:
Police Pos. Special and variations:
Official Police and variations:
Mark III Generation:
Pythons/Anacondas:

We'll just have to combine all the S&W votes up into one.

As of this post:

S&W = 24 votes
Ruger = 17 votes
Colt = 7 votes
Other = 4 votes

I voted Ruger because the only S&W revolvers I own or will ever own are pre-lock models which means my last 4 new revolver purchases were Rugers.

I don't even visit the S&W website anymore. :barf:

Phil DeGraves...

For pure shooting fun, I like old Ruger 3 screw SAs. Great triggers and accurate.
Oh, in .45LC, of course.:)

Aryfrosty...

I really like my Taurus 450 - it's my main carry gun. If you'd like to get rid of yours, pm me.

Biker:)

I like my Taurus 608 a lot... with the way they're talked about, I half expected this thing to give me fits, but it's a nice gun, functions perfectly and the trigger is incredibly smooth... It's not really heavy either, lighter than any Ruger trigger I've sampled.

I wouldn't say it was a better revolver than my Colt, or anything else really... I just like it more. In general, I seem to like Colts more than Rugers, and Rugers slightly more than S&W.

I think I like it so much because:

A.) it's my first .357 Magnum revolver
B.) it's my first ported gun
C.) it's my first stainless revolver
D.) it holds 8 shots
E.) I'm surprisingly accurate with it... what's not to like? :D

...this is it.

S&W with 3" barrels N-Frames all the way! Add Ahrends Tactical Revolver Stocks (or equivalent "boot grips") and you have a gun about the same size as a Glock 19. Four inch barrels are good too!

At the time of this posting, Ruger is not running away with it. While it is the single leading vote getter with 23, the combined S&W is 44.

At first I thought this was unfair, because the Colt Python and Anacondas were semi-custom, but it looks like their historically low volume of manufacture is hurting them.

That said, a S&W can be tweaked very nice. I voted for the K-frame.
