I am in need (want?) of a small bedroom safe to store a few defense guns. Who makes the best small (<30") gun safe for my budget ($600-1000 delivered). Fire protection is not necessarily needed (though I won't complain if included). Security is paramount, but the budget isn't growing. Note that this is only a bedroom safe and size is a big factor. I am leaning towards a 19 gun Stack-On that is sold at Dicks Sporting Goods (free shipping via truck ;)). Let me know what you think.

P.S.: Mods, feel free to move this thread to Accessories if need-be...just wanted a larger sample size. :)

just a word of advice make sure your floor is strong enough to handle the load of the safe and guns. Some get a rude awaking when the safe falls through the floor.:D

Mav, my boss bought a Zanotti Armor modular safe recently ...

http://www.zanottiarmor.com/

I went over to his house to check it out a few weeks ago. It's very well made, and the best part is that it can be moved around easily since the heaviest piece is the door at around 100lb. Once you decide where you want to put it, you assemble the bottom, back, sides and top using large steel pins (inside), attach the door and you're done. Many safes are a PITA to move in/out of the house or from room to room. Anyway, maybe worth a look.

:)

Don't think that even the smallest Zanotti modular safe would be available for $600. or less, but another nice thing about them is the ability to chose which way the door opens. That, to me, would make one of them perfect for a closet install.

I am willing to spend up to $1k delivered, but it is still a bit more. Take down feature is nice but not necessarily needed (typical right hand door swing is also fine). Thanks for the replies, Mav. :)

I just bought a Sentry safe from Home Depot, (cause i work there) and love it. It is not fire safe but it is really secure and holds 14 guns. They want $399 for it but I got it for 350 after a coupon. The Home Depot is really far better than Lowe's........shameless plug:)

Thanks for the reply, but they use a proprietary combination lock and I would like a electronic keypad. Something that I didn't mention in the OP, because I am not adverse to switching it afterwards. Most safe locking mechanisms are made by Sargent and Greenleaf and are easily replaceable (or so I am told), but their safe precludes that option. :)

ThePunisher'sArmory, how many times do I have to tell you to clean up your room?!

In our area we have Attwoods farm supply and they have Elite Stack-On safes that come in 28 gun model. I paid $550.oo for mine on sale and have been impressed with it. There are different models from keyed to combination to electronic combination. You might Google Elite and see what you come up with.

Mav, it is a good idea to find a local retailer to buy your safe from. Try and work a deal with him on delivery and INSTALLATION.

If you get one of any size, you and every one of your beer drinking friends will have to spot it, and I can tell you, it is not fun. Also, it may seem your getting a deal if you buy on line or from a distant retailer that is advertising a ridiculously low price, but the shipping will eat you up.

We quit selling safes except for the smaller ones because of freight charges that were getting outrageous.

:D

They have Winchester 24 gun safes on sale at Costco for $499. I might consider one of these, if I didn't already have an amsec.

Inside-The-Wall Safe... my 2¢

I prefer this to a standing safe in my bedroom because this takes up zero space. It will hold three or four long guns, and however many handguns you think you'd like to pack inside. You can get these online for under $500 (V-Line Closet Vault). You'll need to cut a hole in the wall for it to sit between two studs. Behind the bedroom door, is a good place to mount it.

There is a cheaper version out there, but don't bother with it. I think when I move out of my house, I'll buy the cheap wall safe to swap with my V-Line, so I can take it with me to my next house.

Uncle Mike, I find your statement to e very true...but I have found one Ebay seller (that has a actual storefront) that is reasonably nearby and plan to work him on the price and do the shipping myself. It is this safe here... http://www.dixielockandsafe.com/Store/V3/Products.aspx?ProductId=21&CategoryId=3. I like the thickness and the electronic lock and it just happens to fit my size constraints perfectly. The fire resistance is a nice bonus too. Not a big fan of the color...but they still sell black paint last time I was at Lowes. Let me know if anybody has any experience with one of these. :)

I like the idea of a wall safe, but would rather have a little better security.

I have a Liberty Centurion, had it for about 7 years now, and love it.

Some have condemned it to the trashheap because it's classified as a "Residential Security Container" and not a "safe". That's a load of crap. I guarantee you an opportunist burglar will not take the time to try to crack the damn thing, wouldn't know how, and if he did know how he wouldn't try provided your additional security measures do not afforded him the time to do so.

Buy a Centurion and buy with confidence.

I have looked into centurion, and like it...but the one that Lowes has for $400 has a dial (without daylock) and I can't find a electronic replacement for it b/c I'm not sure of the size (it says "Tristar") so I don't know if a Sargent & Greenleaf (henceforth referred to as S&G) or LaGuard will fit. :banghead: Locksmiths feel free to chime in. :D

Green :barf: I hate green (with the possible exception of OD and only certain things...NOT cars).

These "Winchester" 24 gun, 60" safes from Sam's are a pretty danged good value at $600 or so, plus delivery. I'm under no delusion that they will actually protect from fire or stop a determined thief with tools, but if you bolt them down, they are a good deterrent to the smash & grab thief. Got a couple of them. Nice features.

For rifles I have two Stack-On 14 gun cabinets bought from Dick's for $150 each. They are key locked and I keep the keys inside my Cannon gun vault. The Stack-Ons are bolted to the wall but are not fire resistant. Being in the basement limits that risk by a bit, and sheet rock can be built around them for the same effect. As to security, being bolted to support beams in the wall they aren't going anywhere and will be resistant to more casual thieves who don't have heavy duty cutting tools. They are light weight (I drove them home from the store myself) but once they are securely bolted they might as well weigh a ton.

The only thing that I had to do was alter the height of the plastic barrel mounts as they are set up too high for many modern rifles, especially bullpups.

The 24 gun may (probably is) more than I need as this is not a primary gun safe (just for "backup long guns"), so I don't want it to take up too much room. Cabinets are out of the question because security is my main goal. Thanks, I appreciate all of the responses, even if it not what I need...I like ideas (have thought of building my own out of 1/2" plate, but don't know where to get a door and haven't the expertise to build that).

especially bullpups.
Somebody knows me...and one will be going in it too. ;)

That is the one thing that the Stack-On offers....security. Any thief is going to ahve to be fairly sophisticated, either able to cut through some pretty stout steel or able to pick a lock. They will have to come prepared.

Good luck! I'm already planning a third Stack-On. Those darn straight handled Mausers take up too much room. My PS90, on the other hand, looks lonely in its slot. Heck, I put in the second cabinet and I'm already four rifles short from the git-go!
