Greetings all. I do most of my rifle shooting with AK/AR rifles and milsurps using iron sights. However, my club does have a six hundred yard firing point and I would like a scoped bolt action rifle to test my skills with at that range.

I'm thinking something like a Savage 10FP in .308, with an as yet undetermined scope may be my best choice. I want a rifle/scope combo that is rugged and reliable. My budget is about a thousand bucks, so I know compromises will have to be made. I will shoot this weapon prone with a sling, or perhaps off of a bipod.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, and approximate accuracy capability with different combos also welcome.

jagdpanzer347,

The Savage you mentioned should work, as well as several other heavy barrel .308 bolt guns. As for the scope, I can highly recommend the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 mildot scope at about $175. Mount it in some heavy duty rings (Badger, Mark IV, etc.) on a picatinny base, and you will have a rock solid setup.

easy. spend your thousand buckaroos on the scope and ammo. you shouldn't have any problems hitting 600 yrds with your AR. I shot 600 yrds all day yesterday at an NRA mid-range match with an AR15 service rifle (irons sights).

worst case, if you bought a crappy AR, spend $350 having it rebarrelled at whiteoak, then you're still left with $650 for a scope.

savage 12fv, 308, stainless, fluted, in 243, or 308. Nikon or Mueller, 6x14 or 6.18 power. would all be under 800 bucks, with tax.

Also been thinking about Savage 10FP in .308, 20 in barrel, looking for a good scope now, the Bushnell Elite looks like a good choice and I like the price tag.

USSR was right on. I have three of the 10X 3200's and they are the best value out there........Essex

Thanks for the replies everyone. In addition to the Savage, I have also been considering scoping one of my K31s and using it as a low-buck "tactical/precision/sniper" rifle. Anyone out there going that route?

I had the same budget.

I went with Tikka T3 Lite in 308 , SS Scope 10x , rings and mounts , Harris Bipod , came in right at about $875. Now I just need to get out to the 600 yard shoots , been practicing at 100. :)

jagdpanzer347, Do you have a 1903A3? It's got a 600yd setting on the rear sight. I'd try that first, but then, I get along with sights better than scopes. YMMV. I like my Savage too, but mine's a Model 11GL in .243Winchester... it can be had in .308 too and cost less that the M10FP.

Mustanger98, I wish I had an 03. It's on the list, but man, it's a LONG list. Once I feel comfortable at the 300 yard line, I will get certified to shoot at the 600 yard line by the High Power guys. I really prefer shooting irons and will try my AR and M1 Garand at 600. I really just want to diversify my collection a bit with a scoped precision rifle. And perhaps some day, find a place a can shoot at over 600. When my skills catch up, that is.

...an 03. It's on the list, but man, it's a LONG list.

I know how that is. And '03's ain't cheap. I have an '03A3, but it's basically a parts kit assembled on a commercial receiver. It shoots, but I'm still in the process of testing it out. Since I won't be goofin' up a gov't receiver in doing this, I'm fixin' to mount a Lyman #57 rear sight for more of a Nat'l Match type set-up.

will get certified to shoot at the 600 yard line by the High Power guys.

Is there some law that says you have to be certified to shoot 600yds? I'm not saying it's better not to get with someone who knows how. I've not been to a range longer than 100yds yet or I'd have already tried for further just because I like to see just what all I can hit.

...AR and M1 Garand at 600.

I don't own an AR, but I do own a Garand... mine is a real one from CMP; it came back from Denmark. I know both will go the distance; Marines qualify to 500yds (or do they talk meters?), and plenty of competitors are talking 600yds and further with the AR-15 and the right bullet. On the M1, I've heard from some competitors who say you're not shooting a Garand till you're shooting 600yds+. From what I understand, 150gr ball is fine to 500-600yds, but 168grainers will buck the wind better from there to 1000yds. That's my understanding. I'd sure like to try it too.

Have you seen Outdoor Life this month? There's another thread on here about Micheal Bane's AR-15 article there, but Jim Carmichael wrote a write-up on the American Rifle and covered the '03, M1, and AR-15 as well as the Sedgley sporter '03's. No more than I've cared for AR-15's, personally, I didn't have any problem with the articles.

Mustanger98, the club requires you to be certified at 600 so they're reasonably confidence a shooter isn't sending rounds out beyond range property. All it could take is one stray round and the club could be shut down.

In that case, good thinking on the club's part. All it'd take to have that stray bullet is too much elevation. My understanding from being on another board with some Marines is that a M-14, firing the standard 7.62NATO round, elevated 45degrees will send that bullet 4.5miles. They said that was from the Marine Corps Manual.
