Planning on getting a pair of wood service grips for my revolver from Smith & Wesson. Which is the better grip and why?

If it's a K-frame, go with Pachmayer Grippers, if it's a J-frame, go with the Pachmayer Compacs. Wood grips by S&W look great, but after firing a few rounds, you'll know why most people switch to rubber.

The grips will be for my S&W 686. For the model 60 I'm picking up Saturday, I agree, the Pachmayr compac grip is better and more practical. I'm surprised by the responses really because I thought S&W had good quality grips. I plan to buy the model 10 before the end of summer and thought the service grips would bring out the blue nice.

Look at S&W's site some of the finger groove combat grips they list there are very nice, like the Ahrends for example for $69.95. As far as square or round goes they will only fit that particular frame style (the service grips) you can buy round to square conversion grips but the only way to convert the square grip frame to round is with alot of cutting or filing. ;) .

I just bought a 66-2 that came with the best medallion wood grip S&W ever put on one of their revolvers IMHO,

I looked for a pair on ebay, but they are going for like $70-80 in perfect condition, and the last set went for $65 and they were damaged.

For a 686 round butt go with the pachmyr compacts. These work great on K &L frame round butt guns (they cover the back strap). If you have real small have go with the pachmyr compact professionals they are smaller because they leave the back strap uncovered.

I wasted a lot of money on grips for my 4" Model 10. The out of the box Magnas with a Tyler grip adapter work just fine.

When I bought my first used 3" Model 65 it came with the original grips but it was fitted with Pachmeyer Sigs. I took it to the range, fired a bunch of .357s through it, watched the rounds go where they were supposed to and left it alone. Concealment isn't a big problem for me. If it was I'd carry a smaller gun, not smaller grips. 'Sides, my other 65 has Magnas and I have a Tyler for it. I don't carry it, yet. :scrutiny:

Heavier magnums like my "4 58, 57s or 29 have a decidedly higher "ouch" factor. As purty as wood or pearl or whatever grips look on these guns rubber is the way to go for me. YMMV.

I don't really have a problem with the grips on the 686. It's one of my favorite guns and frankly, the Hogue rubber grips it came with, while comfortable to shoot any grain of .38 or .357, isn't the most attractive looking grip.
