but the Kieth style bullets and hard Cast Wad Cutters are terriffic defensive rounds.
Very Bad Choice, if over-penetration is a concern.

Cast Keith SWC's will shoot through a BG, several interior walls, and still be going fast enough to hurt someone bad!!

Ayoob has an excellent ballistics analysis of the most popular handgun calibers in his book 'Concealed Carry' that's worth studying.

Doesn't exist. Listen to bigfatdave.

I WANT it to go all the way through the target AND expand fully. A bullet that is stuck in the target is a missed opportunity to cause tissue damage.

Rule number four ALWAYS applies. To you. To me. To cops. To soldiers. Even when you have to shoot to save your life. You are responsible for what that bullet hits, even BEHIND the target. For ever and ever.

Speer Gold dot 124g +p HP for 9mm. Speer Gold Dot 230g +p HP for 45 ACP. That what my local LEO carry so I do as well. OR I really like the 124g +p HST in 9mm and the 230 Gr +p HST in 45 ACP. In the house I prefer the 45 as its slower FPS but out and about I like 9mm for capacity. Also Speer Gold dot for 38 special, standard velocity as well.
I dont care for 40 cal. its a unneeded compromise IMO.... Go fast and have capacity, or slow with a lotta thump.

Other than Bullet Bender, let me be the second to actually answer the question.

For the Range : Winchester (Wal-Mart) White box -- and LOTS of it.
For Carry, : Winchester PDX1 (+P in 9mm).

I do this for both my pocket carry Bodyguard 380, and my home defense/OWB open carry Sig P229 in 9mm.
Makes it easy to order online or pick up at Wally World, whichever meets your political flavor.

Oh yes, and LOTS of practice.......

I love this link:

This is all you really need to know:

9mm Luger
# of people shot - 456
% of people who were not incapacitated - 13%

.45 ACP
# of people shot - 209
% of people who were not incapacitated - 14%

Only a 1% difference.... which is amazing considering most of the 9mm were FMJ. Basically buy whatever you shoot well with and can afford to shoot a lot of. Practice makes perfect.... I'm personally sticking with the 9mm. I like to shoot a lot. :)

I haven't ran the calculations, but my gut says the sample size is big enough on the .357 (unlike the .44 magnum) to make me think there's something to the high velocity of the sig and magnums. Does Magnum Velocity beat out Big old .45 Lead thump? The study seems to suggest this is the case.

.357 (both magnum and Sig)
# of people shot - 105
% of people who were not incapacitated - 9%

Build your house accordingly and you don't need to worry that much.
My house was built on the principles laid out by the 3 little pigs.
1 layer of 5/8" drywall over 2"x4" studs, the house was then sheathed in 4"x10" planking over a 5/8" sheet of TenTest fiber board with brick on the exterior.

get a baseball bat. If you want to use a gun get somthing with a low flash. the bullet that stops a 120LB bad guy is not the same as one that will stop a 230 lb.bad gun without the perfect hit, are you that good? You will be so hyped you may not even hit the target and you will need to identify the bad guy first that it's not one of your kids or friend that needs your help now.
