Best semi auto under $500

Looking for opinions on the best 12 gauge auto for under $500.
Its for Christmas on a budget. Have looked at the Stoeger.
Any ideas or suggestions ??

probably not your bag but saiga if you can find one. depends on what you want to use it for.

That would definitely be the Mossberg 930 auto. You can get the combo model 28" & 18.5" barrels and it will double as a home defense shotgun. The Choate Mossberg 9200 +2 mag tube extensions will fit them and give you 7+1 capacity and be even with the muzzle with the 18.5" barrel. The Mossberg 930 auto is receiving very good reviews. I have a 930 SPX tactical model and it is very reliable. The price for the combo model is $459 low retail.

Best for what?

If you want something for personal defense, get a Saiga in 12 gauge. And start saving for some magazines.

If you want to shoot trap, skeet, etc, you'd probably be better off with something more conventional.

The best semi-auto under $500 would be the Beretta 390 with synthetic stock and 28" barrel for $495 at Wal Mart.

I know a guy who has one, imported by Baikal, not Remington and it works pretty well. MSRPs are generally about $100 more than the actual cost at most places too.

I've got a verona sx-405 that works great. That being said, I would jump on any new beretta autoloader for under $500.

I have been lucky in the used semi-auto department:
Winchester 1400 fair condition $160 out the door. Gave it to my 12 year old son for Christmas '05 and he loves it.

Remington 1100 excellent condition $175 out the door.

If you shop around there are deals to be had....

save $50 more and you could get a new Remington 1187 from Dick's. Very versatile, soft recoil, and a good bargain.

Another vote for the $495 Beretta at Walmart. Nothing even close. You could spend $1000 and have a better looking gun, but not any better.

Just got in from Walmart and see the Berettas are up to $529 now. Still a good buy in my opinion

That's also my vote. These are made in the USA in the same plant that makes the US M9 pistol.
