I'm going to be buying a new semi auto shotgun. I'm getting it as a Christmas present for my dad. It needs to be under $600 for thegun then I'm going to throw in a few boxes of ammo. Has to be a 12 gauge and have a nice wood stock. I'm more into rifles than shotguns myself so I don't know how nice you can get for the price. I'm going to stop at scheels and look around a little tonight but what do you all suggest I look into?

Your choices for a NEW semi-auto with a NICE wood stock will be limited at that price point. I would go with a Beretta 3901 if you can live without the wood furniture and can find it on sale for about that price. Good luck with your journey.

I'm really starting to like the CZ 712. I have an older one and its been awesome. The wood may not be "nice", but it looks good.

Weatherby has some that fit your price range. Such as this one

here is a list from the folks above, sorted ascending in price

here is a google search, spend some time then you can take specific model numbers and go back to google and do a search on them with the word REVIEW in the search. If one or 2 people b*tch, that is just 1 or 2 b*tching. If you see a bunch, then that can be a trend indicative of a problem

if you can step off new, a used 1100 can have some really nice wood. or maybe a browning gold or winchester sx3? (new sx3 is a shade over 700)

Wow shotguns are apparently a lot more expensive then I would have guessed. If the wood looks good that's good enough it doesn't have to be amazing. But I might just have to settle for synthetic as its cheaper. That Beretta sure looks nice I'll have to find one to look at.

Beretta A300 Outlander, just a shade over your limit, but worth a look.
+1. Dick's Sports has them in their sale flyer for $650. I have a 3901, and it's pretty much an indestructible gun. Not wood though. You can expect to pay $200 to $300 more for wood if you're getting a Beretta.

EDIT TO ADD: I got my 3901 at Gander Mountain for $525. They were closing them out when they were discontinued and the A300 was coming in. You might look around and see if you can find some leftovers like that. Try Wal-Mart stores -- they used to carry the 3901 and might have some sitting around.

I run across 1100s and 11/87s a lot in pawn shops for under 400 bucks in good shape. I've been tempted a few times. I have an old Winchester 1400 I bought new 25 years ago. It's a good shootin' old gun and wasn't but 255 bucks when I bought it. They can be had used for around that now in good shape.

Everyone says Beretta and I'm sure they're good guns. My Winchester only chambers 2 3/4" stuff, to some is a drawback. I have pumps for waterfowl where i might want a 3 or 3.5", but I shoot 2 3/4" fasteel on ducks and it works great, pump or auto. I have a 10 gauge for geese.

All iin what ya want, I guess. I kinda like huntin' the pawn shops, though. Can find deals that way.

I'll never buy anything but a Beretta auto shotty. Get the Beretta that falls within your budget.

for under 600 with wood stock might look at the weatherby sa 08 and the mossberg 930.

Here's another recommendation for the Weatherby SA-08 as I've used mine for the last 3 seasons and have never had any problems nor any failures to feed or eject. Very nice wood too.

Another vote for Beretta. I found a NIB 390 AST with beautiful wood and a 26" barrel for $450 a couple of years ago and have beat it unmercifully. It shrugs off the abuse and continues to look great and shoot even better than it looks.

Bought a beretta 390 'Silver Mallard' for $450 is is a beautiful shotgun that shoots as good as it looks. I feel like it's one of my better deals. They're out there, just gotta track'em down.

I also recommend the Beretta I've had mine for ten years now and hunted with it in rain, snow, and sub zero temps and never had a single malfunction.

Don't overlook the Mossberg 930. They are very reliable, soft shooters, made in the US, and the Walnut stocked versions are surprisingly nice compared to what we are used to seeing on their pump guns.
