$800 limit? STI Spartan, Rock Island 1911, CZ or EAA, maybe a BHP. Raise the limit $300-400, SIG X5, STI Trojan perhaps a Dan Wesson Pointman 9.

Does it actually work and shoot right out of the box, or does it "need" another $500 in work to make it shoot properly, like most 1911's do?

The Browning Hi Power is the "Forgotten" 9 MM auto. It is still just as good and better than most of the current crop of plastics. It is utterly reliable and has a "natural" feel and balance... I highly recommend it!!!!

Right out of the box. Some after market work in the future would be fine, but not having to spend hundreds of dollars just to make it reliable and accurate.

STI Spartan will run out of the box, ramped barrel will take Wilson combat 10 round magazines too. My old Colt series 70 only work with 9 round mags. Buy a good pistol with quality mags that fit and it should work right off.
