May be looking for a 12 O/U to compliment my 20 O/U. Budget would let me run up to around 2K. It'll be a user and I'm not into high end wood or engraving for this one (not that it can really be had in this price range...). Thoughts?

if you surf the net, there are good buys on used o/u,s. i bough four or five like new used shotguns in the last several years. the last two i bought were this browning citori trap for 1050.00 plus 45.00 shipping and this browning citori upland special for 800.00 plus 50.00 shipping. these were bought a little over a year ago. eastbank.

Check out Franchi. A recently purchased Instinct L sold for about a grand. I think they might have been tied in to the Swiss Franc so I'm not sure if that price still holds.

Beretta and Browning both have models in your price range; however they are NOT identical in how they fit, so shoot both if you can before you buy to see which fits better (That advice is for buying ANY brand)

Mostly for dove, I would go for a 20, something that handles like a wand, not a club.
New Franchi, and perhaps CZ (which you can actually find for under a $1000), and maybe a Ruger Red Label if anyone has one left. Used, Beretta 686, Silver Pigeon 1, Browning Citori, are all great guns. The Beretta's and Brownings definitely fit different, so try a few at the range if you can before you buy.

I bought a beautiful Beretta 686 White Onyx Sporting 30" O/U like new, with the plastic case and chokes and even the outer cardboard shipping box for $1500 OTD.
Of course I spent another $1000+ getting a full set of extended Optima HP chokes, some nice Beretta luggage style case, a GraCoil recoil plate, and an adjustable comb.

A friend of mine went used. Some sort of browning. Paid less than $2 K and has been happy with it. If I ever want an over under I would go used.

Lots of new O/Us out there under $2K: Beretta Model 686 Silver Pigeon, Browning Citori White Lightning, Franchi Infinity. and Ruger Red Label, if you can find one in stck somewhere. Tons of similar choices on the used gun market as well. Take the time to try them out and see which one fits you the best in terms of overall handling and balance.
Here is a beauty, a Remington 3200. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=775216 If I was in need of a fine trap gun, this is a nice one. If I remember right Remington sold the patents of this gun to Krieghoff and they went on to make the K32, then the K80.
Was told that the 3200 had the fastest lock time of any shotgun available. I have shot a couple of 3200 skeet guns and they were sweet shooters.

The Mossberg silver reserve II is a nice choice, Msrp is $1250, so with your stated budget, you could get both a field and sporting.

Since the Red label s yet again discontinued, I would stay away as support for discontinued models tends to wane after just a few years.

I sure hope that Mossberg fixed the chronic fining pin breakage on the Silver Reserve - I'd not buy one otherwise.
A Beretta or Browning is your likely best bet in terms of both getting a good quality gun that can last many many tens of thousands of rounds without complaint and in terms of getting a gun with plenty of post-sale support from the manufacturer and the aftermarket. Nothing sux worse than dropping a lot of coin into a gun and finding that the manufacturer or importer has gone toes-up or that you can't get the accessories that you might want....

What fits me might not be your cup of tea. The best thing that you could do is hit a big store that has a big inventory. Cabelas and BassPro come to mind. There you could handle the different brands and choose what feels/fits best. Then you can shop online or at your LGS for that gun to find the best price.

A Ruger Red Label would be my choice. No fancy engraving & built like a tank as all Rugers are. You could pick one up below your budget and have well over $500 left to put toward range fees and club membership.

Why would you choose a discontinued shotgun?
Anyone have thoughts on the Winchester 101? I've seen them selling for less than $1,000 new, but they felt better made (and a better fit to me) than your typical cheap O/U like a Stoeger. But I've only shouldered them, never had an opportunity to shoot them, and can't speak to their reliability.

I would like to find a new 101 for less than a grand. My distributors have them at $1200+ wholesale. I had 2 of the old 20 gauges. They made them in 1976 and 77. Should have my butt kicked for selling them, but I had O/Us in he closet at that time. I don't know about the new guns but I think that they are only offered in 12 ga. The Ithaca SKBs were pretty nice. I have had 2 of the 600s, one field gauge 12ga and one 12ga Skeet. Very well built and you can run across one online every now and then.
Of all the O/Us that come thru the shop I would not hesitate with a Browning, Beretta, Franchi, Ruger, Winchester or SKB, but they all have a different feel. I have shot them all and my personal pick is Beretta.

I tried on a Franchi Instinct in a gun shop in Corpus and I've been infatuated with it ever since, though I haven't bought one. I agree that 20 gauge is your friend on doves, been shooting a SxS Spartan for about 6 years now and the speed of the little gun is endures me to it.
That Franchi feels SO good to me, might get one some day. Got other priorities, of course.
