Best tool for cutting loading gate relief?

Scrat, are my eye's playing a trick on me or does that cylinder have a rather odd hole spacing? I can see the idea of only 5 holes to make it elligable for CAS. But the "space" is neither large enough to hold the missing chamber nor small enough to make it an evenly spaced 5 shot. So that means that the missing space is a half space? That must make the indexing of the cylinder rather odd?

That's how Kirst makes their cylinders. Mine is exactly like scrat's. It works perfectly.

I am thinking of an 1851 Navy marshall by Pietta. However it is plated. Would it be possible to use a Kirst 45 Scofield conversion by removing part of the rim of the case to allow insertion, and not have to file out the plated gate area. I know it would be a pain, but that thing is so beautiful, it would be worth the case modification, loading and unloading hassle. thanks, Rollie

sticky cases no problem.

i usually put some talc powder over my brass. makes them easier to unload and keeps finger prints off of them and keeps them shiney :D

as for the cylinder yes it is a 5 shot. if you take a cylinder and try to drill 6 holes in it then do the recess for the edge of the cartridges the cylinder will touch each other and overlap. the cylinder is too small.
R&D solves this problem with angling the chambers. in the back they are as close as they can go to the outer edge to get in 6 rounds then the front is closer to the arbor shaft. Thus when fired the bullet has to be forced to go straight through the forcing cone. Everyone that owns them swears they do not offset performance.

On Kirst. instead of having 6 rounds they drilled 5 rounds with a gap between two for a safety area. The rounds go perfectly straight so they do not have to be forced to go straight through a forcing cone. Same time in order to do this the timing on the back of the cylinder has been way modified to work correctly in the 1858. So once installed it can easily be removed and the original cap and ball can be put in its place.

This won't work. The relief for capping the percussion cylinder is nowhere deep enough.

Thanks Dave, I would have bet it wouldn't but wanted it to, and had no way to be sure without asking. May just get it anyway. Appreciate your time to answer. Rollie

The process is so easy guys. you dont have to be a rocket scientist to do it. anyone can. just takes a couple hours of your time.

Quit being scared and do it

It really is easy. I don't have the sharpest tools, nor do I have the skills of a master craftsman. I build utilitarian things. When I first thought about cutting a gate on mine I'll admit I was a bit nervous I'd screw up the gun. It turned out to be rather nice, I thought it would be harder.

I suggest going through it slowly if you are worried about cutting too much off, take a little off, see if a cartridge will slide in. Repeat as necessary.

It's just going to take some elbow grease.
Here's mine to inspire you!

Bottom Line

There are those who talk about doing it, Those who say they are going to do it, Those who ask how to do it, Those that are scared to do it, Those that cant do it.

Then ME

I JUST DO IT

My Walker and Dragoon....

I started my cut with an angle grinder, roughing it out. Then moved to a 1/2'' carbide bit in my air drill. Finished it by finger sanding with #400, #1000, and #1500 wet or dry sandpaper. Remember to wrap your frame with several layers of masking tape to prevent accidental gouges. After my final sanding with #1500 grit, I cleaned the groove and applied Birchwood Casey cold blue with a Q-tip. Swirl it in the pattern you want, wipe it rather quickly and the finish will match the case hardening. My Kirst cylinders fit perfectly, these things are a blast to shoot with .45 Colt.:)
