Best tool for the job..

Ed Ames suggested a thread where we could discuss the best uses for particular guns, or the best guns for particular situations. We get a lot of 'favorite guns' or 'my want list' types, but how about narrowing the firearm to the best use?

I'll start with a few possibilities. What are the best/favorite firearms in the following categories?

1. Concealed carry, personal defense
2. Home defense
3. SHTF, zombie apocalypse
4. Wilderness survival
5. Civil war/foreign invaders
6. Plinking for fun
7. Competition shooting
8. Hunting
9. Multi purpose
10. Collecting/investing

So what is your best or favorite firearm for these specific uses & why?

We don't do whacked out Zombie or SHTF discussions and if you look at most of the home defense threads they culminate in stupid arguments because everyone's best home defense gun is different depending on where the "home" is and what surrounds it. Civil war/ foreign invaders? Would foreign invaders be like martians or those pesky French and Italians?

In my opinion and just that, my opinion, you have a few in there that only serve to lead to arguments.

Here is an example and surprising this thread is still running.

There are all kinds of hunting, and many kinds of competition. We do not discuss SHTF or apocalypse--read the rules. War? Really! One could collect pin fire revolvers, Native American trade guns, or English double rifles.
