Best Truck Gun

I Love Sharps solution, but I can afford Cosmo's... plus there's the secondary coolness of the "Bolt-knuckles" :D

If a 1918 don't hurt me, I think my shoulder's safe, lol.

Damn I live in Kansas, how are you judgin prarie dogs? Really thats a gift you have, I dont know how many time I've estimated critter weight at 2 am , only to find I was 30 or 40 pounds off the very next morning!

I think a lever action 30-30 would be a good choice. With the Hornady LeverEvolution rounds, it is a legitmate 200 yard plus rifle. I'm guessing that would cover the majority of your needs. I would imagine that they would require a bit less maintenance than a semi auto.
I gotta agree with you. The 30-30 with that Hornady LeverEvolution is really accurate.

i could be wrong but in ohio i don't think you can have a loaded rifle or mags in your vechicle. you can only have loaded handgun mags if you have a ccw. if that is still true i would go with sks, pc carbine (that takes the same mags as my cary gun) or bolt gun that takes stripper clips. although if i lived in bear country i would skip the pc carbine and add a lever action in 30/30 or larger to the list. if i lived in a state where you could have loaded mags in your vechicle, it would be a saiga in 7.62x39.

I picked up a butchered k98 for a song, recrowned the barrel, threw it in a Boyds laminated stock, installed a Lyman peep, and now it is possibly my favorite rifle.

Well an old bubba Mannlicher 95 S Stutzen carbine in 8x56 fits in my service truck body. It is sighted at 50 yards with the enblok clips full of 1939 8x56R Nazi rounds. They are super thumpers and appear metal piercing too! A fast and light gun that can be left unloaded and gets into action fast. Only cost me $100, I figure if stolen I'll put out the word locally to get ID from anyone asking for ammo, and THEN carry an M4 ..............

Dunno why folks keep coming up with this "Best" idea. There ain't no such of a thing. :)

I never had a problem when using my Mini-14 as a truck gun, for whatever a .223 will do. And, looks to me like this Ruger Scout would work, having shot one last Saturday.

Short, light and handy, and with most any medium-power cartridge oughta do just fine. AR, AK or SKS? Sure, but without the awkward long magazines guys stick in ARs and AKs.

Truck gun to me is what you'd see in the back window of a farm truck.

Used for coyotes, private land deer, burrowing nuisance animals, or if one had to put down a cow or other large critter. aka Lever action 30-30.

Though on occasion you'll see TWO rifles, and often the second is a heavy barreled varminter or at least a scoped bolt gun.

If a bear was misbearhaving I would shoot, shovel, and shutup... and not post about it : )

Can I change my pick? SHORT MAGAZINE LEE ENFIELD 10 rounds 303Brit, nothing will happen to it in your truck as bad as its already seen, and it goes from empty to loaded in one click No1 MkIII, No4 MkI, either one.

Never owned a truck personally, but my uncle who used to farm in central Missouri kept a Remington 788 in .222 topped with a Weaver K8 in his back window rack. Kept the magazine in one of the bib pockets of his overalls, next to the can of Prince Albert.

Cmon now, 99% of you guys that have a rifle in the truck because you CAN not because you need it. Not that there's anything wrong with that. For pure utilitarian purposes the "best" truck gun is the one that happens to be there... I think most of the needs above up to and including putting livestock down could be accomplished with a .22 mag.

Jubjub I like your uncle. 22Mag? If I wan't to "choot " a lowrider full of AKs, I want .30 cal. The reason for a truck gun, is so on nights you have to sleep in the truck, it seems more like home:D

I would like to add, before I'm called a racist again, 99% of low riders are owned by hard working americans, and fine citizens. But a lowrider full of AKs is a WAR WAGON. I'm going to Defcon 4!

Truck gun= utility/work.
Carbine length/semi auto
AR15.
Ruger Mini 14.
SKS.
etc.
My pick would be a shooter grade Chinese SKS paratrooper model.

Jeff56, I didn't call you a liar. I was referenceing your previous derisive remark about 500 yd shots. Sorry, you didn't make the connection. It 's not my place to call BS on anyone. Lest I have blowback on my own. Besides I think most people know it when they hear it. I'm curious though did you have the food airdropped with the ammo?

Apart from never leaving a firearm in my van, or car I think my concealed pistol would have to make do in a pinch. Now if you owned a ranch and were inspecting your fence line, checking on water stations, or keeping an eye on livestock a lever action in 30-30 or stouter would be reasonable. If your ranch was large something in .308 would be a good caliber to go with. When all is said and done I still wouldn't leave it in my vehicle at the end of the day. JMHO

Apology

Jef 56 Your absolutely right I was just covering for a snarky post, I went back and read post 39 and there was not what you would call a derisive remark. In fact I think I caused this whole mis understanding with my post #40. You calling me on it is the best thing that could have happened. I didnt realize just how out of control I've become. And they say admiting a problem is the first step to curing it. Boy, you really took me to school. I also want to apologize for anything that gave you the impression I was hinting at or insinuating your a liar. I really think the best thing would be if you just blocked me, so I wont slip and hurt your feelings again. I would say theres a pretty good chance, i'll read another of your posts and give in to the urge to respond. I'm also sorry you took what I said about the ammo/food drop as a slam on where you grew up that was not my intent, I was slamming how you went on even longer than I am now describing how remote it was. Your right if I cant be any clearer than that I should just leave it to someone who's good at it.
