i have a couple of single shot 12 gauge NEF's i got as gifts that work great..........!:)

But that's about my experience with NEF's.............The others look like decent shotguns to me though.

ILMONSTER. where'd you get your trade in from?

-I just bought one of the U87s from Centerfire ($229 for short and long barrel included).

I'll let you know what I think when I get my hooks on it!

Thought I would update thread.

Several users reported poor quality with the U87s so I did not order the one from Centerfire. While the other Norinco 870 clones have had past rep the these new Century speced ones users on ar15 forum had reported sights falling off, etc.

I bought a NEF 12ga 18.5" 6shot Protector. Its another 870 clone made in china for (Corrected, they are owned Marlin, which is owned by Remington), actually it appears to be nicer than a 870 Express at least, and it was only $167 shipped from Buds Gun Shop (they raised price to $180 since then, and have sold out now). Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I have one of those and was about to recommend it. Shoots anything (cylinder bore), I've decided to go greater capacity in the same model.

Ummmm, NEF is owned by Remington, not Mossberg.

Plus one here for the Norinco.

If you can find one.

Too many folks are snapping them up as fast as they can get them.

The NEF Pardner Pumps are an excellent choice if you plan to by a field gun or a HD shotgun.

They have the right stuff for a field grade shotgun.

They are great for what they are and how they are built.

They have a variety of styles and even make a cantilevered barrel for the Pardner Pump 12.

I have a 12 and a 20 in the NEF Pumps and they are well made and look good ,too.

I would endorse Mossberg, Maverick, Remington(old Wingmasters) and the lot but NEF is just making too good of a deal for a true field grade shotgun.

Big 5 stores have the Mossberg 500 combo for $299, but you can get 10% off of a purchase by signing up online for their mailing list... So ~ $270

For me to rely on a certain model for defense, it has to have been in production and tested for a long time, basically measured in decades.

It may seem silly, but that is my first criteria. Then I purchase the gun and test that gun myself for reliability, ergonomics, etc.

For me, there are two pump shotguns when it comes to defense that are currently in production. The Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500.

I'll ditto that. On a budget, I'd be happy with either, and also a used Winchester 1300, and I actually like the 1300 better than the 870, and I think like I my Mossberg 500s maybe even better. I own all three, and I'd recommend anyone on a budget be shopping pawnshops for used deals any of the three.

Good budget shotguns with a defensive slant besides the 870 and 500 include.....

Winchester's 1200 and 1300. Their older model 97s and 12s are also, but are assuming rarified prices.

The BPS.

Ithaca's GREAT 37. If I HAD to get a pump other than an 870, this would be it.

High Standard's Flite King and its variants.

SOME Savages. Others are junk.

Among autos, the A5, 11 and 720 are hard to beat.

How do you operate the safety on a mossberg with a pistol grip (and especially a top-folding stock?)

That is a most excellent question. My guess would be the answer is "you don't". At least not with your shooting hand, but with your support hand. Never thought of that before.

Take a look at the NEF protector. It's an 870 knock off .2 3/4 ...3 inch chamber,18 1/2 IN barrel, good quality , less than $200

GA. I saw one go in April with strong bluing and some honest wear, but many years of good use left in it for 160 OTD! It was a Wingmaster.

I ordered a NEF Pardner Protector 12 gauge back in March and I finally got the call last week that it had come in. Took 3 months but it arrived. $190 plus tax. Not a bad deal for what I have heard is a great gun for the money.

BTW, I have been looking for a used Mossberg or Remington but they are very hard to find and seem to garner a premium price.
