I'm curious as to what others thing is the best deal in a stainless, full-sized 1911?

I'm in no big hurry. I would use the pistol largely for plinking, perhaps some Steel Challenge competition and home defense?

It seems like the Ruger SR1911 is unbeatable for the price but I would appreciate hearing from others. Thanks.

I third the Ruger, with the Remington coming in behind it. RIA guns seem to be well-respected among those who have them, but I don't know that they have a SS model out yet. Another newcomer (I'm guessing, since I have only recently heard of them) is the one put out by Regent (www.regentarms.com.) I think, like the RIA guns, they're made in the Philippines, but I might be wrong. They retail for around the same price as the RIA guns, but offer a stainless model. I'd go for the RIA myself in that price range simply because they're more proven.

I have shot both the SR 1911 and a suprising Taurus PT1911, both shot very well for their price points. The edge went to Taurus, with it's amazing trigger and forged frame, also got to shoot a Taurus PT1911 9mm, something you cannot get in a Ruger 1911. What do I use to shoot Steel Challenge, STI Trojan 9mm, don't come in stainless but you can get them hard chromed. 1911 in 9mm is an amazing thing, so little recoil, so accurate, so fast back on target, to the next target, only pistol with less recoil is a .22LR.

Well it seems kinda silly to say it now, but...Ruger. I went to the store 2 years ago to pickup a Taurus 1911, saw the Ruger and well...you know the rest. Bought it on the spot for $650. Great shooter, tough as nails, eats everything, blah blah blah. I can't imagine the emptyness I'd feel if I passed on the opportunity. Haha! I'm usually wary of buying a new gun before the "bugs" are found out and fixed, but 2 years and right around 1500 rounds later, no bugs yet. I guess they're tough to find now, but if you do see one, I recommend it. Happy Hunting!

I never owned a 1911 but I was in the market when Ruger put theirs out. It took me a year, but my one and only 1911 is an SR1911. It has also become my favorite gun to shoot and the one I am most accurate with.

Taurus gives you a lot of nice features in their 1911s and they are want of the few "budget" models that offer a stainless model. And you get a good variety of caliber choices too.

I have had mine for several years now and I've yet to have a problem with it.

I haven't shot the Ruger, but the S&W 1911 seems to be flying under the radar. They sell in the same price range as Kimber, Colt, and SA. The S&W 1911's I've owned and shot were several notches above the others at about the same price. Don't overlook the Smith.

The RIA guns are made by Armscor in the Philippines. Not sure if there are RIA marked guns in SS, but there are certainly Armscor and Charles Daly marked guns made at the same plant.

What's your budget? The best value 1911 in $2000 budget means complete different thing than $500 budget.

Also, since you are in CA. Are you limited to roster or are you exempt? For example, both Ruger and Taurus 1911 aren't on the roster. So you can't get them unless you pay extra for SSE or get them in PPT.

Here is a good thread for guide.

Another vote here for the Springfield Loaded in Stainless.

My value per dollar calculation was a bit different, so I also went with a Colt in Stainless.

Then again you can always buy the first and original .45 stainless. All american made, compact, and can be bought in great condition for less than $800.

Good question, I have the same one. My answer is also Ruger Sr1911. The local range has one I their rental fleet lots of usage and no problems. The Regent 200S (made in Turkey) is in second place. The later ones look really good. Some of the early ones have machine marks visible.

It seems like Kimber's magazines work well in every 1911 but there own.
