Talk me out of a 1911

The Remington 1911 R1 is another great option if you want to save some of your budget for ammo. Mine shoots well and has been reliable so far. Also, American-made 1911s at $600ish are hard to find.

Don't count out the Turkish made Girsan and Tisas brands.
Good shooters for great prices.
Stainless finishes are available.

Also the Brazilian Metro Arms have nice hard chrome offerings.

1911's are an addiction, an expensive one at that. I've owned probably two dozen and don't any right now. Had a friend bring over a Remington R1 Enhanced the other night and it seemed like a very good 1911 for the money. I've held the Ruger too, and either way you can't go wrong. I'd also consider a STI Spartan or Trojan. I'd stay away from Kimber though, nice to look at but they're really overpriced for what you get. My favorite short of a full on custom 1911 is a Dan Wesson Valor, Govt. or VBOB version.

Look into Rock Island Armory also. I have two. A Match and a Tactical. Both are full size and all steel. For the $$, pretty good buy. I used the Match model in IDPA for about two years with no upgrades other than grip stocks.

Liked my SR1911 so much I bought a second and a Ruger Commander as well for my younger son. While other folks have commented negatively about carrying a 5" Gov't Model, I have never found that to be an issue presuming you're using good leather.

Well I did it... local gun store had it for $670 so i had to get it. Now just to get out and shoot... Negative temps outside make it hard to get out... Soon!!

At that price point, I'd get the Remington R1 over the Ruger. The first time I picked up a blued one, I was really surprised how smoothly the slide racked, rivaling my Nighthawk. It's an extremely nice pistol, especially for the price.

Well done, I did a safe cleanout recently and couldn't bring myself to part with my SR1911. Sold the Colt XSE but kept the Ruger and a pair of Dan Wessons.

Enjoy it in good health.

Congrats on the purchase. Let us know how you like it after shooting.

You do realize coming here & telling this bunch to talk you out of buying a gun is like asking a drug dealer to help you detox.

Congrats - you're well on your way to your first? BBQ rig?

Now you need a fancy holster for that bad boy!

I have an R. Grizzle charcoal elephant ring on the way - should be here in a few days. Also got a pair of pewter Hogue grips for it - I hope all those shades of gray come together?

My buddy called me up the other day - he's getting his first custom holster - he liked the High Noon Sky High (I have a couple), but they told him they don't make a holster with a retention strap for 1911s - he was going to drop back to their Slide Guard, but I told him if I was going to do that, I think I'd give R. Grizzle a try.

He ended up ordering the Georgia 2 in light brown with dark elephant hide trim (on the belt loops and reinforcement @ the mouth). He called the owner and he said the one pictured at his site was his current personal carry rig.

Second pix on the bottom is the Country Boy in charcoal elephant (with reinforcement) - the 8th pix across the bottom is the G2 in light brown with black elephant trim - that is one sweet looking rig! I'm trying to decide which gun for one in the future? :banghead:

Been collecting holster pix for years - R. Grizzle is one of the few custom makers I could find that has a reasonable wait time (13 weeks).

Anywho...enjoy your new rig.

Oh yeah - forgot to mention - I did buy some Wilson 47D mags - I like the small bumper pad - unobtrusive, yet gives you something to grab if you have to rip the mag out to clear a stoppage. Got 'em at Midway USA - one of the few places not selling the 47Ds above MSRP - they also have a sale 'til Feb 2nd - $25 off $125 using code 20125.

I guess it's nice to have some flush fit magazines, but I wish Ruger had included the ones that come with the 5" SR1911 (with bumpers) instead of the flush-fits that came with the CMD model.

AHHHH! The 1911 journey begins. It's a great ride, expensive but great.
I have numerous 1911s, Colts, Wilsons, Ed Browns, a new Dan Wesson, Sigs and Kimbers etc etc. I do not have a Ruger yet. The 1911 is a pistol which fits my fancy. Totally American, SAO, .45acp, good grip appeal, very purdy, accurate, somewhat heavy for CC but not prohibitive and time tested. It is designed and intended to be reliable in the 5" bbl platform and to fire RN 230gr. ammo. I'm fine with this. Mine all have a different personalities when it comes to what they like to digest. My first 1911 was a 70 series Colt Gold Cup. I would buy your Ruger and not look back. You only go around once.
