I picked up a rifle today that has a real dirt and grimy web sling. What's the best way to clean these things? I don't see lettering. The fabric is in good shape. I was thinking about just letting it soak in water and laundry soap.

That!
What he said!

Also in the Army.
I have taken more then one naked hot shower with one and a toothbrush & bar of soap.

Sorry about that!

But once an imagined image is fused in your mind?
There is no forgetting it, until you get too old to care.

My wife today, at my request put my web gear in the washing machine with the usual soap allotment, then set them outside to dry. Worked great.

I passed on the shower idea, but thanks anyway:) I used dish soap, soaked in the sink and an old tooth brush. It looks pretty good

The shower was the designated sling cleaning area (rc & I are sorta contemporary; he's older, I think ) We used to take our M14s (less stock) in the shower sometimes, though if we got caught there were repercussions... :uhoh:

We just asked the armorer for an old used sling (he kept a box of them) before an FTX, and put the good clean one back on after.

Or go to the surplus store just off base and buy one for five bucks.

Wait till you hear about GI's washing M16's in the shower.

During an Operation Enduring Freedom deployment cruise late in 2001, as the LPO-in-charge of a 80-man troop berthing space onboard a US Navy ship deployed to the North Arabian Sea, I can personally attest to this as being fact.

I walked into the head (bathroom) of a troop berthing space hours after all our marines had embarked back onboard after several months of being in-country in Afghanistan. I was not surprised to discover every shower being used. Other than the hiss of steaming hot running water, strangley there wasnt a sound coming from any of the shower stalls. Much to my amazement, I slowly realised that there was not a single marine in the the showers scrubbing down. After calling out with no response back, I flipped back the shower curtains to find each shower stall filled with rifles and SAWs...full-hot water streaming down.

All the marines were flat on their backs in the berthing compartment happily snoring away...

You aren't a true gun nut until you've taken a shower with some part of your rifle. I've done it myself with exceptionally dirty stocks. It's too delicate to be left to any machine, and throwing it in a tub would ruin it.
