my 1911 has a slight bit of rust on the exposed part of the barrel... I've heard that lightly using 000 steel wool along with hoppes is the best way. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

If your barrel is bright finish, the steel wool & oil will remove the red rust, but may leave a stain where the rust used to be.

It won't hurt a thing to "shoe polish" the chamber area with fine 600 grit emery paper to renew the shine.

Something I have experimented with lately is making a slurry out of Mother's Mag/Al. Polish and dipping some 0000 steel wool in that. It might help take out the "stain" rcmodel is talking about. I have used it with great success so far on blued parts and nickel; I am going to try it on some bores this weekend.
