I would like to put a small scope on a Mosin, maybe something like the Burris Scout 2.75x. What mount is the best? Also, anyone know of a cheap yet quality alternative to the Scout? They cost about three times as much as the Mosin! Thanks

Well you are right about the Burris. I for some reason thought they were around $350, but I just found it for $209. And I found the B-Sqaure mount at the same place. Thanks for the tips.

Well you can always go the POSP route. Its definately not for the purist, and definately should not be done with any Mosin that is not common as dirt. You can add a POSP for fairly cheap. The POSP scope is a modern Russian scope that can be had for around $100-150, plus a mount you can get for $30. The scope is a great scope for the money, its real surplus stuff so no cheap optics.

You do have to drill and tap into the receiver, as well as get your bolt handle bent down. I have this exact setup with my 91/30, but it was a very common 1942 Izzy with horrible wood when I got it. So basically very little collectable value. I added a nice 6x42 POSP with lighted reticule that I got for $100 out the door.

Here is an excllent article on how to do it--

Davo: I got a 6x42 and I love it.

Pros: The optics are bright and clear. Has a built in bullet drop indicator for 7.62x54 (these originally came off of Romak PSL type rifles) so it works perfectly with the Mosin. Has a built in range finder, using man sized targets. Quick detach with rail system (very similar to AK-47 rail system). Russian built surplus, in other words actual military surplus, not some cheap crap. Has illuminated reticule for low light conditions. Very Cheap for optics of this quality, only around $100. Mounted off centered to left so iron sights are still usable.

Cons: Heavy. Have to drill and tap your receiver, which is obviously a permanent alteration, so don't use a rare Mosin! Fixed magnification.

As far as repeatability it is a fine scope with a rail mounting system. I have mounted and unmounted mine three times since I got it and each time it went right back to zero.

Here is a couple of pics of mine--

>Don't tell the Mosin fanatics, especially those at gunboards. :)

In my mind its your gun, you choose what you wish to do to your gun, but you must also keep in mind that if you intend on selling it down the road then you may have to take a hit if it was rare....

Anyways, another option you can consider is buying a repro sniper imported from Century:

and other sellers.

Or look around the pawn shops.
Or scope it yourself as you proposed. The POSP scope looks very nice in my opinion. Or you can try to find an old PU scope and mount. Or of course a weaver mount and scout scope.

The quickest way is to just get a scout style mount from Darrel. You can do a search on that, there are dozens of threads discussing it.

I second that... I've heard great things about Darrel's mounts. He has a scope mount that supposedly holds even the mightiest kick that you dont need to drill and tap. I'm going to order myself one of these days. Stay away from the no drill EBay mounts, they come loose in a few shots.

Dubious

I have an S&K scout mount and a Leupold 2.5x48mm LER scope being installed on my M44 right now. Should be done on Tuesday and Wednesday. You can't go wrong with a Leupold and S&K guarantee their mounts to hold zero. I'll post how it shoots in a week or two.

I'd say get a PU scope and mount, and drill and tap it yourself with a drill press. It only takes about 15 minutes, and afterwards, you have a nice WWII sniper rifle

My thoughts exactly! If your Nagant is a good accurate shooter and you want to scope it then definitely put the PU scope on it I did on mine and love it.

Uhh who's Darrel?

The aforementioned S&K mount sucked buttermilk on my M44! The doggone thing wouldn't level close enough to get the scope elevation even close at 100yds! I bought a cheaper model that had a shorter section of rail on it and it too sucked buttermilk. The screws that go through the rear sight block wallowed out the aluminum of the mount causing further crappiness.

Also the frigging scopes axis is so high above the bore that any kind of cheek weld is largely impossible.

I've got a Darrel's mount on my M38 with 4x Simmons pistol scope, and I love it. It's held tight for four years now, and the scope has only needed occasional minor adjustments during yearly sight-ins.
