I'll be going to a 100yrd indoor range to sight in my RRA 20" Varmint rifle. At 100 yards where should I be on the Target to get good accurate shots at 200yrds.

Sighting in Rifles was never my strong point. I'm more of a Open Sight Shooter and my Deer Rifle was sighted in by the gunsmith.

My varmint hunting load (1/2 moa @ 200 yards & a ragged hole @ 100 off a bench) chronies at 3177 fps with 50 grain V-Max bullets. I'm +2.1 @ 100, +1.1 @ 200, & -1.1 @ 250. Works for me. If your looking for POI of "dead-on" @ 200, 1.5" high at 100 yards is a reasonably good rule of thumb, assuming a bullet weight fairly close to what I'm using would be my guess (and this opinion is worth, oh say, 0.02). With crosshairs-"on" out to 250 yards, coyotes are just plain "got" with my load of choice. Good luck, Ruben.

Bartholemew,

Thanks man. Honestly for ammo I will be using some Reloads I bought at a gunshow. Should I invest in better ammo to sight in? If I stick with the 25yrds rule, I don't think ammo will be that HUGE of a difference right?

No at 25yds, you should be fine. I just asked because different weights have different drop and windage. If you are using anything around 55gr, you'll be fine with the process outlined above.

Ya its 55gr

"...was sighted in by the gunsmith..." It might have been bore sighted by the smithy, but you're still going to have to sight it in for you. Nobody can do it for you.
"...Reloads I bought at a gunshow..." Shooting other peoples handloads isn't a good idea. You don't know if whoever loaded them knew what he was doing or what the ammo is loaded with. Spending a grand or so on a rifle then using unknown ammo isn't a good thing either.
"...better ammo to sight in?..." Sight in with the ammo you intend using.
"...that HUGE of a difference right..." Nope. Good ammo is essential. If you're not reloading, you need to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best.

what would you guys say is best barrel length for a varminter? I'm looking at getting a RRA when I come home in Nov. and the dealer told me he has a 16" and a 24" should I just go with one of them or have him order an 18 or 20 incher? plan on using it against paper and everything on 4 legs from yotes and smaller.

my only experience with the platform is in the 14.5 and 20" models with the fun switch thanks to uncle sam.

heck i shoot a ruger 10/22 with a cheap sight and cheap ammo at 100yrds and i shoot to kill every time. i use a fedral cartrage and a very cheap tasco sight. I think the best way to sight in a gun for varmets is to shoot at them

My custom AR is a 223AI. It's 1 of my coyote rigs. I'm shooting the 65 JLK Low Drag @ 3050 mv, and my zero is 225 yds. set up for conservative point blank on a 6" coyote's vitals. I use a ballistic reticle for long-range shooting with this rig, so i always shoot to verify the actual zero. This helps ensure that my longer zeros are on.

Programs

There are a couple programs that'll let you play with this. I've been using the Remington shoot program (available on Remington's website).

Put in scope height, velocity, ballistic coefficient etc.

I bought one just like it minus the collapsible stock when I was home earlier this month. Ran some Black Hills Blue box 69 gr through it and it shot 3/4 minute off of an improvised rest. Sigh it in about an inch and a half high at 100 and go from there. What kind of varmints will you be after? I bought mine for short range prairie dogs (100-300 yards)

Mostly to kill the mass amounts of Raccoons that raid my feeders, the Coyote. Also just to have a paper hitter at the range. I tried a .17hmr on the coons and a .22lr on them as well but it doesn't seem too effective. So decided to give the ol' .223 a try.

RubenZ, that looks like a nice varmint rig you got there. I agree with feeding it some quality ammo. You just never know about other people's handloads.

There is also a free online ballistics program located here: http://www.eskimo.com/~jbm/calculations/traj/traj.html.

I'm not experienced enough to know if it works any better or worse than the ones you pay for, but hey, the price is right, so it seems worth trying out.

salty
Buy the 24" - A 20' RRA is great but so is the the 24' and it will give you 120 fps free.

I have a 20 inch but if I had it to do over again I think I’d take salty’s advice.

The Annoyed Man

I’ve used the site you listed. Worked good for me.
