Before I deploy I'd really love to watch a good movie about the Winter War and the Eastern Front. I've seen "Enemy at the Gates" but I'm wondering what other movies out there cover the same ground. Foreign is ok, I have no problem with subtitles (as long as the local store has it).

For that matter, I'd take any movie with good Mosin action; I may not be able to get an M-39 right now, but I can dream. :)

Stalingrad is a good movie
I watched Saints and Soldiers recently but it wasn't related to the Eastern front.
On another gun board, someone mentioned seeing a movie about some Finnish soliders. This movie was produced in Finnland, I dont recall the name, but it did receive some good reviews. I will try to find the mvies name for you.

Slightly off topic, have you seen Das Boot, The Pianist, Down Fall, or Come and See?

I believe you won't find best Soviet/Russian WW2 films too easy.
Those that are the best are:

"Zvezda" (Star)

"V avguste 44" (In the August, 1944)

"17 mgnovenij vesny" (17 events of spring)
The best and most popular spy story about a soviet spy in the german command who works in the spring of 1945; not exactly the front-line story but...well...one of most popular Soviet war films ever. And the msot popular Soviet mini-series too (12 series)

There's been a slowly building movement in Finland to start looking at their WWII heritage. Up till now it's been highly controversial and little mention was made of it in public. Thankfully a number of films have been working their way out of Finland onto DVD. "Winter War" was mentioned

"Ambush" is excellent. Certainly the best film about the Continuation War. Lots of small arms action. Some of the scenes are hard to believe, but then again some of them actually happened.

There's also Kukushka or "Cuckoo"

It's set right before the Lapland War when things were turning sour between the Finns and Germans. The details aren't all that correct, but it's more of an "artsy" movie. The plot involves a Soviet soldier, a Finn and a Saami woman none of whom can understand one another.

There's a new documentary in the works about the winter war called "Fire and Ice."

It looks excellent:

There are other Finnish war films I have heard mention of on the Mosin boards, but they haven't been put out on DVD quite yet.
