I've had two GunVault safes (both the mini and the multi) and both have had the same issue: unreliability.

I'd say about 20% of the time, they fail to open on the first try. Usually they open on the second, but sometimes it takes three or four tries (by which I mean entering the code). Sometimes I have to push on the door, fiddle with it, etc..if I needed to actually use the safe for its intended purpose (quick access) this would be a disaster.

I'd like something small (single full-sized pistol) to keep by the bed. I have a proper vault for everything else but this is mostly for (a) ready access, and (b) keep kids out.

Any recommended alternatives?

You might take a look at the various ones that use mechanical locks. They are quick, reliable, and very durable. You will pay more initially, but it will last you many years, if not a life time. Plus you can buy replacement components for many of them if needed.

I bought a gun safe called "The Gun Box" a few years ago for Christmas. It uses an RFID bracelet, ring, or sticker to open the box. Which is a very quick way to open it in a hurry. I prefer the biometric backup since I had the RFID wristband stop working and needed a replacement. The biometric allowed me to get inside until I received the replacement.

Knox makes a great one, Simplex lock which is proven.

V-line also makes one but it's not as heavy duty.

I had the Gunvaults in the past and they are neat but fail too often.
The Simplex lock isn't as neat but just as fast and much more reliable.
